  • OM-1.1 EVF and Rear Screen Turning Purple

I was out shooting deer on Saturday using my OM-1.1 and 150-400mm lens, and upon focusing the EVF and rear screen turned purple and the image was stretched vertically. It was an intermittent issue and as far as I could see only occurred when using C-AF and not S-AF (but as it was intermittent that may not be accurate). It happened with two different cards, and it didn't seem to matter which card slot they were in.

I've tried reformatting the cards, cleaning the card and lens contacts, a different lens, a different battery, but the problem still occurs. I'm on firmware V1.8.

My next test will be to move the cards and lens to my other OM-1 set up identically and see if I can reproduce the problem.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

    Thanks for any ideas.

I can't think of any reason why the cards should have an affect on the EVF and screen. If, as you mention, you have already tried another lens, battery and cleaned the contacts then it would appear that the camera needs to go to Portugal for a repair assessment.

There is a recent discussion on Dprview.com about a purple screen happening on an OM-1 ver. 1.8.

Thanks Joe. I am aware of the Dpreview discussion and have contributed to it. But I thought it worthwhile to post here too in case I get some helpful ideas.

I’ve had something similar on my OM-1 Mk2, it looked like a bad TV signal. It only happened once though. My OM-1.1 is on this latest firmware and I’ve not seen any issues so far.

It might be worth going into the hidden service menu where the shutter count is recorded and checking page 4 which is “damage codes”, a diagnostic used by OM support. It won’t tell you much but if there are some hexadecimal numbers recorded there it means the camera detected a fault otherwise it just shows “D:”. Mine looked like this, it is not possible to know what these numbers mean as the codes and meanings aren’t fully listed anywhere.

In my case, the OM-1 Mk2 problem didn’t persist and I just recorded this image and pressed OK to clear these. Don’t do that if you have a persistent problem and intend to send it for service!

I can’t think of much apart from doing a reset, checking battery, lens and SD card contacts etc like you’ve done already. Lens release button has occasionally got stuck on cameras causing issues or I find something like a strap pressing it - I just exercise it a few times to sort it out and check the lens mounts properly with a satisfying click.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. Maybe it is a firmware issue.

I don't think I'm alone with the purple screen issue. A couple of people on the Mu-43 forum have reported the same here. You need to scroll down a few posts. It seems to be an issue with FW 1.8.

How do I report a possible FW bug?

I would report it on the link under the "Contact Us" section bottom left of the OM System Support page here:

I've used this before for camera issues and they do get back to you. Be prepared to be asked to send it off to Portugal for service!

It sounds like a firmware bug to me. I haven't bothered doing the update yet as I currently have no need to photograph at 50FPS with my 50-200/f.28.
                  Best wishes

I'm inclined to agree as there seem to be several people thus afflicted. I have always upgraded firmware as soon as available as they usually add 'improved stability' whatever that means.
