I am not sure what all of the hatred for instant coffee is about. She who must be obeyed, loves her Nescafé frothed up.

But if are on a long drive, I like to pull into a coffee house and have a real coffee

    All the best

A good quality instant has its place, and it is easy to make. I was tempted to make too many! But I think using fresh coffee beans does result in a better result and as it involves a bit of preparation and effort, you're less likely to be making a coffee when you don't actually need one.

A strong and valid point Ian, thank you.

We live on an old coffee plantation and some of our neighbours grow coffee in their gardens. AA Blue Mountain is a popular Kenyan brand and it is sold in vacuum sealed bags 500g for the equivalent of €9. Is that expensive? I usually pack a few bags of tea/ coffee in my luggage for presents for friends during our travels.

My doctor encourages me to drink coffee for my health, no more than 2-3 cups. You were doing well on several cups in a day.

There is something alluring about the aroma of coffee…….

        What a fascinating discussion

Can I get you to send a nice pack of roasted AA Blue Mountain to the Far East?

Gate Keeper The price of coffee varies widely! The coffee beans I'm using at the moment were on special offer in the supermarket; buy one 1kg bag and get the second for next to nothing. It worked out at about €6 for 500g. You can get cheaper coffee but in my experience it's a risky purchase. I aim for 100% Arabica beans (Robusta is the other type, used in cheaper blends). There's plenty of coffee on sale at €15 or more for 500g. Speciality roasts and origins are even more expensive.

And so it continues ..... After purchasing a Clever dripper coffee maker and being pleased with the results I decided to see if I could improve on my Krups grinder. Having viewed numerous Youtube reviews I ended up ordering a Fellow Opus burr grinder, which is capable of grinding for espresso too, albeit with a rather fiddly adjustment mechanism for finer grinds. It looks smart and and performs well for the Clever dripper but some of the reviews are not very reassuring and I am not sure what the aftersales service is like (if there is any.) Hopefully I won't need to use it. A couple of days ago I decided to replace the kitchen scales which I have been using and have ordered some cheap Yagua coffee scales, which I hope will be more accurate for small quantities. I resisted the urge to buy the expensive, complicated models available as I only need them to weigh out the coffee. If they are all right when they arrive tomorrow I hope that I will be able to stop purchasing any more gear. Hmmm, we shall see.

I'm in the UK briefly to help my daughter to move house from Exeter to London and after dropping some hints I'm hoping to get some coffee-inspired Fathers Day presents

        • #67
So the Father's day hint dropped was noted and I am now the recipient of a new portafilter and basket for my simple Delonghi espresso machine - it's made a big difference. I think the old (non-pressurused) basket was not up to scratch. I can now use coffee beans that would clog the machine before and I'm gettiing better taste and consistency. I can now drink espresso without sweetener! I've also got a spinny coffee leveller that I also use to tamp the coffee. Portafilter and level/tamper: £36. I only need a new coffee scales with timer now and I can get what I need for about 9 Euros.

The Lelit espresso machine and Eureka Mignon grinder are very high end but, together, still less than an OM-1 body

Since that was taken a tamping press has been acquired, Chemo left her with weakened hands.
            Its the one bottom right
Also has an old Nemox Lux burr grinder that I modified with a few available bits to turn it into a stepless model.

Readers of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' series will know that the Jura X7 was the machine to have - a snip at £2805 - although now superseded by the X9 at £3983

My wife's old Nemox burr grinder needed something to make sure all of the grind got used.
Step forward an old lens hood, just the job and nothing gets wasted now.
The machine at the rear is a Moccamaster, bit of an iconic design still manfactured and assembled by hand in the Netherlands.

Neat - I can't remember if I mentioned that my grinder has a silicone rubber belows that fits between the lid and the hopper so as the grind is finishing up, a few presses ensures all the coffee gets through. I don't leave any coffee beans in the hopper between cups. It's a bit like using a bit like using a lens blower!
