  • Mind Your Punctuation When Uploading

The following does not apply here, which made it difficult to diagnose.

I am quite active on the Manual Focus Lenses website and upload many of the same images here and there.

I just could not upload certain images at MFL which I could easily here. I tried reprocessing them or resizing or lowering quality. Nothing worked.

I finally got help from the owner.

It is said that the smallest things can cause the biggest problems. In this case it was an apostrophe in the image file name e.g "Maharajah's Well". The upload instruction could not be understood by the site software.

Computers are notorious regarding punctuation. One of the big offenders I was familiar with when working in IT was the differentiation between a space and a null value; both of which are invisible to us but are different in computing terms. A space is regarded as a character, while a null is none existent. I've had issues in the past where my postcode was not recognised by an application only to discover that there was an offending space at the end of. Once this was removed the software was happy to proceed.

    Computers, eh?!

I worked in geology and GIS building sub-surface models. The amount of energy spent explaining the difference between null and zero was astonishing.

The amount of effort I had to put in to testing whether a value in a blank field was a space or a null was phenomenally frustrating 😑

This is what is known as Artificial Intelligence but more correctly as ruthless logic or Artificial Stupidity.
I do worry about a computer with intuitive thinking. HAL 9000 anybody?
