I tend to use the term "Making a picture", as this tends to be the case in the majority of images I make, this includes pictures that have been captured without the use of camera or lens.

I'm always puzzled by the objection to "taking a picture" or "shot" though if the language bothers someone I'd do my best to choose a similar term that doesn't cause them to object.
There are a lot of ways to describe what we create...
Snap, shot, photo, image, capture, photograph .. before you move into "nice portrait", "dramatic landscape" ...
And what we're doing
taking a picture, making an image, capturing a scene, freezing a moment...
I would never ask a family member if I could take their portrait - unless I'd rented a studio and lights - so I guess I'm taking piccies

This is an interesting point.
IMO this is the point as it depends on how an photo has been produced.
I take snaps.
I also produce slightly more involved photos too, what you call those is up to you. Some have much more thought in the taking but others require more PP to get what I want to achieve.

These days if I take anything at all it's just a snap. In the past I often took photographs (or made images if I was feeling pretentious) that involved days, weeks, months or even years to plan and execute. These were definitely not snaps, but whether they were any better for all that effort was a matter of opinion!
The term "shot" derives from the days when we had 24 or 36 shots on a roll of 135 film, which could also be referred to as "exposures" or "frames." I tend to use all these different terms interchangeably when writing, if only to provide variety and avoid being repetitive - it's bad enough when my pictures send viewers to sleep without my prose doing it too!

Shot I reckon comes from the American film industry who shoot films. Still not an answer. Although I do use that term, I don't like it, and my new year resolution is not to use that word when talking about a photograph...
Not sure about frames, I suspect it's referring to the finished product, which includes a photograph...
Image could be anything but suggests a well processed photograph. Picture could be any display of art, and I think the term "snap" is onametapeic...... if that is true we should be taking "Clunks" with our SLS's, but with our silent shutters who knows what we are taking.

As someone who uses both digital and film, in the beginning, in recent times, (a second awakening, as it were) I was recognising a difference in approach. With digital there was a temptation to fire off a shot, chimp and retake with adjustment(s) as necessary. In the case of film, it's costing money for each exposure so more care is required, compositionally, exposure DoF etc. But fast forward six months or more and I'm finding I'm devoting almost the same amount of care and attention when I'm shooting digital. Today, being an example, I used digital and spent an age composing, determining exposure (I use an incident meter mostly) before firing the shutter.
I was going to suggest "exposure" being another term used, but that might be taken the wrong way.

Frames (& frame numbers) are those when using "spray & pray" (sequential) method, or if you're showing off your wealth with ProCapture.

I would class mine as snaps but tend to use a lot of different terms when referring to other people's. Pics is one of my goto terms but also use image and photo.
