  • OM System OM-1 used market.

Out of curiosity, while browsing MPB's website yesterday, I found that there were 43 OM-1 cameras for sale. All either in mint condition or excellent. Is this because the OM-1 Mk2 is so superior and there has been a huge number of upgrades or are Olympus owners leaving the brand in numbers? It seems a lot of 'churn' to me!

The OM-1 Mark II came out relatively soon after the Mark I. OM System also made it quite clear not to expect much in the way of updates for the Mark I - very disappointing in my view, so it doesn't surprise me that quite a few moved up to the Mark II. OM System still seems to have new stock of the Mark I, as well, which they can't seem to shift. On the bright side, if you can get a good one at the right price, the Mark I is a really great camera, a bargain. I don't feel hampered by not having the Mark II extras.

Neither do I feel hampered at all. I'm very satisfied with my OM-1, though the pseudo-grad filters would be amusing!

Same here the mkii came out a few weeks after I bought my mki ,so far I can’t see any advantage in changing till a mkiii comes out

I bought an mk1 shortly after it came out, then got a mk2 shortly after it had come out because the dials on the mk1 were getting sticky. I use the mk2 99% of the time, sometimes also taking the mk1 to use with a shorter lens if I'm travelling. Oddly, despite the sameness of the cameras, I find the mk2 much nicer to use - just seems more responsive and faster focussing - the improved dials are nice as well. I barely ever use the new computational features (gradND and increased ND level).

I have the sticky dials problem too and sometimes it's seriously bad and can cause me to lose shots.

The body has been back to Olympus in Portugal a year ago but the stickiness has returned. I think the weather sealing is at fault.

RedRobin Shortly after the mk1 came out there seemed to be a lot of complaints about the dials. Mine seemed fine so I was happy. Then, when the camera was about a year old, we went on a trip to the UK and on a particularly cold and wet day we visited the giants causeway and Malin(?) Head in Northern Island. That was the first time I had dial problems. That's not inconsistent with the weather sealing causing the issue. The problem is a bit intermittent and is worse on the front dial. The mk2 dials seem much better behaved.

shakyHands That's very helpful to know and exactly the issue I have.

I don't see anything alarming about the number of OM-1s on the used market. It probably only represents a small percentage of the units sold in this country. Having quite a few available is actually a good thing as it keeps the price reasonable so making entry into the system more attainable. The fact that these used OM-1s are being advertised at around £950 shows that there's a demand for them on the used market whether that's from people like me who recently bought one as an upgrade to the EM-1 Mk II I'd been using for 6 years or it's people new to the system.
      Best wishes

I remember last Christmas time there were a limited number of OM1 + 12-40 kits available for £999 on Amazon. Amazing deal but not surprisingly they sold out very quickly.

Exactly the same as me which has made me annoyed and nervous for future purchases.

The same happened to me. Made me a bit annoyed at the time; not enough improvement for me to justify an upgrade.

I am now just coming round to the mk2/)OM3 idea. It was also nice to handle and all the different lenses.

I originally went for the 1 series em1 etc, purely because of the way the grip felt. Especially with longer lenses. .
I guess it depends on your style of photography and what kit you use and again how the camera feels in your hand, but the OM3 does seem to have great reviews and features.

The overall marketing form OM annoys me. Such regular discounts- it must deter some people buying when they want, and just wait for a deal instead as they are so regular.

I totally agree. My situation is that I keep two rucksacks for my photography. One is for my birding which currently contains my OM1 with the 300f4and 1.4 converter. The other is my travel/landscape which has the em1mk2 with the pano 8-18—12.40mk1–40-150f2.8 and a pile of filters etc. my thoughts were for either camera, with a slight priority towards the OM3 for the landscape to get used as a backup for the birding. Trying not to get a grey which would be my first grey import. Also ditch the Lee filters bundle. And get a kase mag or similar.

Those are the two bodies I mainly use (I also still have an original E-M1 and some Pens). I use the 9-18 - incredibly light and compact, and not bad optically for a budget lens. I don't have any modern premium teles apart from the 40-150 2.8. The lens I'd be interested in acquiring one day is the 150-600, - my small private pension makes next year...🤣

I think a number of purchasers of this kit are trading up to the Mk2 as by selling the lens and OM1 (mk 1) separately, they can more than cover the original cost of the Amazon kit deal.

There’s nothing unusual about that number of OM-1s.

Just try a few comparisons: there are 41 Nikon Z6 mark IIs on there, and 31 Sony A7R mark IIIs and 75 A7 IVs.

It’s just the consequence of people blowing lots of loot on hardware upgrades.
                Regards,
                Mark

My 2nd camera is the OM-5, which I am not entirely happy with.

Considering a used OM1 mk1 as a 2nd camera. As Mbd2, my birding and nature camera (mk2) has the big lens welded to it, so looking for a general use one with all the other lenses I have.....

Shame they screwed up by not putting the newer sensor in the OM-5 Mk II

The OM-1 is still a very capable camera.
