Presumably, the new 12-45 replaces the discontinued long and skinny 12-50. The old one was a bit of an 'odd ball' although I found it a useful travel lens with the macro capability a welcome bonus.
12-50 has some strong qualities and features for a "consumer" lens. It's one of the very few with electronic zoom, which I sometimes find useful when controlling it remotely from my phone. (Camera outdoors on tripod focussed on e.g. bird table; I sit indoors and control it from OI Share on phone). It also is weather sealed, has a macro function, a Fn button etc.
Especially when tweaked with DxO! It's my standard lens really for general photography, unless I'm doing something serious in which case the FT 12-60 gets an airing instead.
The main cause of my bafflement is that we already have the 12-40 f/2.8, which is a lovely lens. Going to 45 rather than 40 doesn't look like much of a bonus, certainly not enough to justify developing a whole new lens, and with losing a stop I can't think of anything else apart from size that might be a benefit. it will be interesting to see if/when it actually comes out.

Going for f4 instead of f2.8 will make the lens significantly smaller and lighter. You can do an awful lot with an f4 lens as owners of the 12-100 can testify.

Latest video from Robin Wong speculates, that it is his view, that Olympus will do F/4 PRO zoom alternatives to the the three existing F/2.8 PRO zooms 7-14mm, 12-40mm, 40-150mm and that the 12-45mm F/4 PRO is the first of the three to be announced in a roadmap.

Back in the days of the Fourthirds, the Pro line were the f2.0. we have that 14-35, 35-100, 150 and those f2.8 90-250 and 300. There was also the Semi Pro that starts from f2.8 like the 12-60, 14-54 and 50-200 All are superb lenses. The cameras bodies then were with base ISO 50, E1, E300, and E500 then moved to ISO100, E5,E30, E400.
Then with the microfourthirds, that base ISO shifted to ISO200. EM1mk2 and now that EM5mk3, The Pro are now at f2.8.
So why are they going to f4.0 and duplicating the whole Pro range for that matter? I think (purely my own) There is a series of new cameras in the new decade ahead...the base ISO may be 400.
I still use the big f/2.8 lenses on the new bodies. On Saturday I had the 90-250 f/2.8 wide open on the E-MI Mk II, and was up to ISO 12,800 by the end of the game. The results are pretty horrible, but usable - which is a whole lot better than having no results at all.
It always makes me chuckle when people say that we don't need fast lenses these days because sensors do higher ISO. One day that might be true, but it sure isn't yet.
In the days when I did a lot of photojournalism I had 2xE5 and the 14-35/2 and 35-100/2. They produced excellent images. Now I have the EM1ii and 12-100/4. The IQ cost is two stops but the combination is less than half the weight and financial outlay. Improved IS means you don't often need the larger aperture other than for DOF considerations which seldom apply in my case.
