  • Has anyone used the M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 II for astro?

Looking for a small lens for occasional astrophotography. The 17mm 1.8 looks compact, lightweight and large aperture and reasonably priced. Has anyone used it for astro, and if so was it OK?

It should be a pretty good lens for that.

I tend to use even wider lens length such as the Meike 6mm for sky and shooting star photos...............

shakyHands If its for occasional use, do you have another wide angle lens? or maybe the 12-40 f2.8? You could use pretty much any lens for astrophotography just depends on what you want to capture?

As usual, it depends on what you are trying to do.

Like M224, I tend to use a fish-eye lens for whole-sky photos and a longer FL, such as 75mm f/1.8 for specific objects. For me, 17mm FL falls between two stools.

To give an idea of what to expect, I used Stellarium to show the area covered by a 17mm lens on an Olympus (MFT) camera:

For comparison, this is shows the FOV for a 75mm lens on MFT, with Orion as the subject:

          Thanks for the replies.
I do have the 7-14 and have used it for astro. My problem is that when I travel to potentially dark places it is primarily for birds so I'm carting my 150-400. If I'm flying that lens/camera/power banks/maybe laptop fill my backpack and carryon weight limit (and size). The size of the 17mm is attractive - I'm sure I could squeeze that in whereas the 7-14 is just too big. I figure I could get detail shots using the 150 end of the 150-400 and wider views with the 17mm if its not a 'bad' lens.

You might also consider the Panasonic 9/1.7, it's a rectilinear auto focus weather resistant lens.
I bought mine from the first batch to arrive in the UK and its unique in the m4/3 world.
