Birds In Flight Photography (E-M1X)

EM1X only

I have been having reasonable success with my bird in flight shot's with AF-C. But have just read the following by Thomas Stirr in regards to using Aeroplane AI tracking (AF-c +tr), he reckons he had the most sucess using it.
Think i will give it a try soon see link below

BIF photography is about 80% technique. No whizz-bang toy can make up for that. I've taken BIF photos with my old E-510 and non-SWD 50-200. I've taken BIF photos with my EM1 Mk I. And, obviously, with my EM1 Mk II. Each generation of camera makes the job easier but it doesn't replace good technique.I think the benefit of AI will be where the bird is against a busy background.

I am a little confused. The reviewer says he uses AF-C + TR on his M1X. On checking my M1X, it doesn't have this setting. Have I missed something?

I'm not near my camera at present, but you can turn tracking "on"

Sapper, sorry, forget everything I said. Your message no7 refers to the reviewer saying AF-C+TR that should read C-AF+TR which is an option ie A1 AF mode.

This tip may be of some help because you can't assign any M1X button to the optional AI Tracking Subjects such as Airplanes, Trains etc. But you can do as I have done (I Back Button Focus on the AEL/AFL button) :

Set Fn Lever '1' to S-AF ....
Set Fn Lever '2' to C-AF either with/without +TR as you prefer ....
While still set in Fn Lever '2', dive into the depths of the Menu to find and select the A3 Tab Tracking Subject AI style you want.

Save these settings and assign to a Custom Mode (I have chosen C1).

Consequently the fastest way for you to select the optional tracking style is to shoot on C1 (if you aren't already on it - I am usually on M-mode).

Btw, I have assigned the Fn centre button on the Fn Lever to home the (dead centre in my case) green box AF. So it's in easy reach and under the control of my thumb.
