  • Tripod Mount - Thread Size

Seems a stupid question but does anyone know the thread size for the E-M1 tripod socket. I've searched the manual but it doesn't say whether it's 3/8" or 1/4"?

    It's the smaller size, 1/4".

OK, I'll be pedantic here. It's 1/4" British Standard Whitworth (BSW).

I knew you wouldn't let me down, Ross. To be doubly pedantic, he didn't ask for the thread pitch, just the size!

Can I be triply pedantic - the thread is now 1/4 - 20 UNC (ISO 1222:2010) not dear old Whitworth but the differences are small and interchangeable in practice.

                  Nah!

(BA - 47.5 degree thread angle. Handy for threads in thin plates. Acme thread - 29 degrees)

Can't think why my wife thinks this is a site for nurds and geeks.....

I still think it's more interesting than watching East Enders - but maybe only just in the case of this particular thread!

We're all nuts. I've lost the thread. Oh, screw that. I'm going to bolt.

Re: Tripod Mount - Thread Size

Well if you think this is getting a bit nurdy, try looking up Holtzappfel threads.
They didn't even use the same inches as us in Europe those days.
Thus we need to make a 19.89TPI thread in the UK today, whereas in the 18 century, and in a different country using a Strassburg inch, it was much simpler at 19TPI which is was easy to arrange on their lathes.

For the non-nurds, TPI= Threads Per Inch
                        Best Regards

3/8" is only used on serious cameras and lenses.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.
