    Card reader woes.

    On returning from my Scotland trip, during which my card reader worked perfectly, my laptop now tells me to insert a card in the reader even when one is already in, the same response from my Wife's laptop.. Thinking that my cheap little reader had malfunctioned I purchased another one off Ebay, but this one's Device Driver will not install. So I then tried it on Herself's laptop on which it installs but will not show a card inserted. I am wondering if a recent Windows update would have caused this problem?

      Agh. That's certainly possible.

      I certainly never want my windows to update anything at all ... EVER.
      I'll do that myself if an update proves the test of time with the knowledgeable folk, like ServicePack2 for XP : that was good, just as SP3 was BAD.
      You just never know until folk have tried them out, and Microsoft are the LAST people I want messing with my computers.

      My internal card reader gets 'lost' sometimes. Restarting the maching has always worked for me. I also have an external cheap reader for when I can't restart and need to load some more pictures.

        I assume you're using a CF card. I've switched to SD which does away with pin problems. You can get an SD to CF adapter that will fit all the FT cameras except the E5 which has an SD slot anyway. Older cameras have the wide CF slot whilst the E5 has the narrow one which won't take the adapter. You should be able to solve your immediate problem by dong an in-camera copy to an Xd or SD card and then trying that in your reader. Xd cards do have a use!

          CF card reader pins are easily bent in shallow card readers, but the Transcend one I use has a deep socket & is much more reliable. I hope you can sort it OK.

            Thank you all for your suggestions. I have now tried CF, SDHC and XD in both readers in both laptops to no avail. I don't intend to buy yet another reader for the moment until I know what the problem is, so for now I'll download from the camera and get my son who is an HP specialist to have a look.

              David, I don't know what flavour of Windows you have, but why not call up Device Manager, then plug in the reader whilst watching the USB section. Hopefully that will identify which USB controller is relevant to the card reader. Then try re-installing that driver.
