  • OM-1 + FL-LM3 + diffusers discussion ....

The Olympus / OM System EU web shop don't include the OM-1 on the FL-LM3's compatibility list but web pages are notorious for being slow to get updated.

Can anyone here confirm they know that the combo either does or doesn't work please?

    EDIT :
Having now answered the above question (yes it does work), this thread may have useful information about FL-LM3 diffusers and reflectors < branded not DIY.

      I just found this :

So it appears to be compatible. The mark 'X' is a 'Yes' but usually communicates a negative whereas a tick communicates a positive.

I bought a grey import OM-1 from HDEW and it came with an FL-LM3, so I guess the answer is yes, but I haven't actually tried it yet.

          *** UPDATE ***
Actually, I forgot, I did try it, both in auto and manual modes, when first checking the camera out, just to make sure everything was working and it worked fine.

I would be absolutely shocked if it didn't work.

I would have been extremely surprised and very disappointed if it didn't work too. But the OM EU Shop doesn't currently include it on its camera compatibility list so I thought it sensible to check further.

It comes included 'down-under' with the OM-1 & it works as I tested it triggering the FL50R using wireless triiggering.

Having now been lucky enough to find an unused, still in its wrapper, FL-LM3 I can report that it works seamlessly with the OM-1 < No surprise there! πŸ˜„

I have been exploring the combo on different lenses (12-40mm F/2.8 PRO and 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO) indoors because it's not the season or weather for minibeasts outdoors. So model dinosaurs have had to perform on stage.

My hunt is now on for a simple diffuser which will fit the FL-LM3 and not lens mounted. I am not a fan at all of the DIY Heath Robinson contraptions for walkabout wildlife sorties. If I'm going out on a mission solely to hunt minibeasts my STF-8 Twin Flash is probably a better option. The FL-LM3's big advantage is to have it in a pocket and quickly mount it if a sudden close-up / macro opportunity presents itself.

Unexpectedly, my 150-400mm TC PRO with or without an additional MC-Extender can work extremely well for close-ups due to its 1.3m Minimum Focus Distance. It's my go-to lens which I use far more than any other.

I feel something that is 'flat pack' attachable by velcro strap would be best. I've bought versions in the past & they have been less than ideal for quick assembly & just plain flimsy, because they were made of several components etc.
Since the FL-LM3 also allows bounce flash etc., then maybe this type may work best, as it will extend the height of the light source, getting around the limitations when using longer & larger lenses, such as the 150-400 Pro lens, described as "Camera Flash Diffuser Reflector Two-Sided Silver/White Flash Light Reflector".

Thanks Ross! That looks like an excellent solution! The relective side would certainly help with my 150-400mm TC Pro which I shoot with more than any other lens. Being pretty inexperienced with using flash I hadn't thought about how the reflective side could work well for me.

Thanks Jeff, I saw that when I did a Google Search. It was posted by an American using a used jam tray.

I had a full English breakfast in a cafe last week after a dawn session photographing surfer friends but the butter was just in wrappers without the plastic. Probably due to everyone wanting to use less plastics nowadays.
