  • E-PL2 "Please check the status of a lens"

Hello, I have just joined the forum and I am new to this type of community as well grateful for the opportunity to learn... I imagine there is a thread already addressing the problem I'm experiencing with my E-PL2, "Please check the status of a lens" and after searching the forum I've come up empty. Could someone direct me to any threads on the subject?
    Thanks

Well if it's the Olympus 14-42 m4/3 lens it usually means the lens is locked fully retracted. Got the message with my Sigmas, and just turned off and back on again. Also try taking the lens off and putting it back on. Do not hold down the lens release button when putting it on because it will allow you to turn the lens to far and the contacts don't line up.

Depending on the lens, you might just have to extend it.

Is it locked? Slide the button on the lens to extend it if it is.

Re: E-PL2 "Please check the status of a lens"

            Hi All,

I also have same problem with my E-P3 and 14-42 IIR lens kit (had it for 2 years now). When powering on in lock state it says that the lens is locked, solve problem by turn the lens unlocked/extend. a few days ago when I do zoom in about 30mm and more, the camera display says "check the status of a lens"... Anyone can explain about this? Does my lens get failure/damage ?

Sounds like the lens might not be seated in the mount fully, or even that the lens release button is being accidentally pressed.

Yes - this or maybe the contacts on the lens mount might need a gentle clean.

Cleaning the contacts is a good idea, but also thoroughly cleaning the end of the lens locking pin & the locating hole in the lens as that can start to have tiny metal chips in it that either prevents the pin from seating properly or clags the movement of the pin (especially into the lens locating hole) & thus prevents the camera from operating (for taking photos, but other operations like Menu & Play may still work) until it is seated properly.

Re: E-PL2 "Please check the status of a lens"

I am getting “check status of lens” error message on my EP-5 with a new 75-300 M-Zuiko Mk2 lens and only with this lens. Other lenses are fine on the camera. When I first got the lens a couple of weeks ago and got this message the first time I mounted it, I popped the battery, put it back in again and gave the lens a wiggle to make sure it was properly latched and it sprang to life. I assumed it was just an initialisation thing.

I mounted the lens again today (only the second time it has been on the camera) and it is giving the same error message but nothing I do will clear it. I have cleaned the lens contacts with IPA and also the camera contacts. I checked the locking pin hole is clear and the lens latches properly into position. I have tried a full reset with the lens attached to the camera. I tried to do a firmware update with the lens attached to the camera, in case there was a lens FW update. Nothing worked.

I have asked the trade seller for a return address to send the 75-300 for exchange (I don’t want it repaired, as there has obviously been a problem from new.) The seller has a good reputation (Flash Camera in Scotland), so I do not anticipate a problem. I had made them aware of a potential problem on the day I received the lens.

Any other thoughts? I see a number of posts on other Olympus forums on this problem, so I assume it is “known issue”.

You've carried out all the checks I can think of. Do you know anyone else with an m4/3 body you can try it on?

Although it will be a grey import, coming from Kerso, Ian Kerr has a good reputation and I'm sure he'll see you right.

I should have thought of that additional check. I have an EP-2, which is all boxed up, where should have got round to selling it on Fleabay some time ago. I got it out and mounted the 75-300 but got the same error message, which is pretty conclusive.

I was worried that Ian would not have a replacement 75-300 lens, as one is not showing on his website or eBay shop but he does. My lens is on the way back to him today for replacement. No quibbles - good service.

Time on my hands after eye surgery nine months ago and a 40-150mm m.Zuiko grey import with the "Check status of a lens " error sitting in a cupboard led me to investigate the locating hole for the locking pin as per Ross the Fiddlers excellent advice .
With a spotter to deal with small screws I reamed the locating hole which is surprisingly flimsy plastic . SUCCESS ! .Thanks again Ross

Hello! Encountered the same problem "Please check the status of a lens". Can you tell me more, how and what did you do with the lens to correct the error.
