  • New functionality with OM-D E-M5 firmware update

Four Thirds User (Fourthirds-user.com) is a sibling site to the e-group.

Olympus has announced that a firmware update will be made available for the OM-D E-M5 that will add two key items of additional functionality we've seen in camera models from Olympus launched since the E-M5 was introduced almost two years ago. We haven't yet tried the new firmware update at the time of writing, but here's our take on what to expect:

    About time!

"Small AF target (icon) was added to the AF target settings.
ISO LOW (100 equivalent) was expanded on the low sensitivity side."

Finally, us whingers won't be able to say Olympus hasn't looked after their users, but the first of the two features have been a very long time coming. I think I will wait for a lull in internet use & make sure my batteries are freshly charged before doing it, but this is one update worth doing.

All I want now is to have the 'small focus points' on the Stylus 1 as well. It already has ISO 100.

Very good to see, however would they have done this without the re-release of the E-M5 with the 12-40?

I dunno, but with the E-M5 Pro kit coming out (from March here), it makes me doubt about the (rumoured) expectations of a replacement for the E-M5 in September now, however, these firmware updates will make it nicer to use.

Great update, actually makes the E-M5 useable for me.
Now hopefully everyone'll be ditching used ones for the new shiny stuff and I can snap one up...

              Mine ditto.

Dare we hope that this marks a policy change from Olympus and they will more often add function in firmware releases, rather than limiting themselves to bug fixes?

              Ciao ... John

The E-M5 I updated just now also needed an update for its 12-50 lens. After updating both the lens no longer auto focused! A camera full reset fixed the problem though.

Sadly, you still can't review previously taken shots on the card through the viewfinder, only the shot you have just taken.

Someone test ISO-bracket for me please?
Set ISO to 200, Jpeg, ISO-Bracket+_1EV and take one frame.
Do you get three differently exposed Jpegs at 100, 200 and 400 stated ISOs?

Yes - although instead of 'ISO 100' it says 'ISO LOW' - there are three ascending image densities as you would expect.

No focus-peaking, sorry. While you can make the AF points smaller with the firmware update, the number of points has not changed.

Hi Just updated my EM5, on problems, very quick and tested it out the small target looks like EM1 with gaps between then which is different. Also to my eyes it does seem more positive focus wise and quicker to lock on, The iso 100 or Low as its called does overexpose, I think because it leans more to the shadow area I recon by nearly a stop.

will test more on this later.

Thanks for that hint. I'll do it without the lens on then.
