  • Can someone explain this for me?

Thought I'd try and complete my own challenge! so popped out to take a few autumnal photos today.

Was quite surprised at the difference between these two photos, as far as I could see the only difference was the use of ND filters on one of them. The dynamic range change was a real eye opener!

Can someone explain why the use of the ND filter has enhanced the photo so much? I didn't realise the E-M1 sensor was so influenced by exposure times...

(JPEGs exported straight off the RAW images reduced in size for the forum by Lightroom, no other editing performed...)

    E-M1 plus 12-40 PRO @ 12mm for both photos.

0.5s f11 plus three stops worth of ND filter

    1/60s f9.0 (hadn't remembered changing the f stop!)

Does the difference in exposure add up to 3 stops? f/11 to f/9 is, say, 2/3rds of s stop brighter. 1/60th from 1/2 second is 5 stops darker, so 4 and third stops darker in total. Assuming my arithmetic is correct!

It looks rather as if the sun was brighter in the first shot. The shadows are more distinct. Did the ISO stay the same? There is no exif data on the images.

I can see more contrast in the first one with the ND filter & especially, darker shadows & deeper blue in the sky. So Ian's suggestion that the sun might have been shining a little brighter (less obscured by the cloud) in the first could be the case.

The ND filter has affected the white balance of the shot

That shouldn't be possible. It looks to me like the second shot was in overcast lighting with WB set of sunlight.

Yes, cloud cover produces a cooler image.

Walti, which, if either of the two shots, looked closer to when you took the camera away and just looked at the tree with your eyes?
