A few pics from a wonderful week visiting friends in Finland.

Most evenings we watched the sun go down behind a beacon way out on the horizon. Then one day we motored out to the tiny island it's perched on:






Back on the mainland, looking from the port - I can see "my" house from here. The boat is named for the village:




The little booth is a lending library. The far building has fridges outside it where, most mornings, you can find fresh fish for an honesty box donation. And the bicycle was a happy accident:

One interesting detail for the birders - the eagle-eyed (sorry) might notice in the first pic that my friend is carrying a branch above her head. She's not doing a reindeer impersonation; this is just how locals discourage the resident skuas. Folk are careful to avoid their nesting sites but are still apt to be dive-bombed.

The wooden beacon isn't lit. That's where this comes in - can't believe I didn't climb up:

Good thinking. That could be where it's headed. Just a handful of holiday cabins out there; no-one in their right mind would hang around for Winter.
