The Winking Man

I took trip to Ramshaw Rocks last Sunday afternoon. Very warm and sunny but with an inversion the other side of the Roaches in the Dane Valley.

As the carpark was rammed I had to start at the top, walk down



and then make my way back up.



It did begin to get hazy as the inversion slowly crept up the A53 and



I thought I may be driving back in thick fog but this was as far as it got



It got quite atmospheric as I climbed back up but I wasn't tempted to go back down!



This was the fella I had come to see (taken just before the mist rolled in)



A feature seen quite clearly from the road but it's very busy with nowhere to stop



and then the mist rolled in



but I did manage to find a way down a steep slope to get this shot before it misted up.

Love those images Andy, you really brought back some childhood memories of scrambling over those rocks. It was our favourite place for a Sunday afternoon picnic and bilberry gathering. As kids we used to desperately look for the wink as we drove up in granddad's car! We used to call it the Winking Witch in those days. That went well with the mermaid stories around the dark pool just over the moors by the Mermaid pub. Definitely one of my favourite places. Must get back there myself. That last shot is just superb, well worth the climb.

I enjoyed seeing these. It brought back memories of a site in Franconia, New Hamshire called the "Old Man in the Mountain". It was a famous site, particularly for tourist as they could pull off the highway to stop and take pictures, but unfortunately it collapsed in 2003. A clever way for people to still see what it looked like has been established where you can still pull off the highway and stand in a marked position and see what used to be. There is a short video on YouTube that shows it. I'm not sure if posting a link is allowed but any web search will show lots of information including pictures and links.
