Little Egret test shots

I had been unsatisfied with my bird flight shots recently, so I sat down and watched a couple of videos by Mike Lane and Marc Humphrey to see which settings they agreed on. I then went through my menus and reset them accordingly. They weren't too different from my original choices, apart from a faster shutter speed and SH2 instead of SH1. I was able to try them out a few days ago on a Little Egret which flew past me at Carlton Marshes and the focusing was a lot more consistent than before, with most of the frames usable. The main problem now is that I ended up with masses of images to sort through. I will have to find a solution to that issue as it is a very tedious task.

The main reason I don't use SH2 is that on my OM1 Mk 1 you only have either 25 or 50FPS both of which I feel are over the top for most birds so I just the normal CAF setting and have it at 10FPS. It's not totally blackout free but the blackout is more of a flicker and doesn't bother me. If only my ageing reflexes were fast enough to keep a Swallow or Sand Martin in the frame...

I used SH1 before, limited to 10 fps, but the main reason I have changed from it is that focusing, metering and white point balance are fixed at the first frame. With SH2 they can change between each frame – or so I understand it. I might try changing the Frame Count Setting to something like 10 or 15 to limit the number of files to trawl through.

Ron, unless I'm mistaken SH! only focus's on first frame. It does not focus on subsequent frames. Were you using SH1 or silent shutter?

Yes, that is how I understand it too. That is why I have changed to SH2, which is what I used for the shots above. I suppose I didn't express myself very clearly.

I copy all photos top the computer and then preview with a basic photo viewer and delete blurred or dubious ones before running them all through DX0 PureRaw4
A friend swears by PhotoMechanic BUT to me, it's too expensive - so I use My EI - My Eye Intelligence and not AI ;-)

Yes that's correct although for the life of me I can't understand why you would use SH1 for moving subjects in the first place 😕

To cull raw photos quickly I view the card with FastRawViewer, just marking those I want to process. Typically for birds this is less that 10% of pictures. Fast raw viewer is very good at viewing raw file quickly.

I use Faststone, much the same as above. But go through the days snaps, and pick those from IQ or repeats to carry on with DXORaw... Similar %-age...
