  • Siesta Part 2 - Hi Res Siesta

So, I finally had a little more (ish) success with hi res mode after it turned out my first attempt was poor to say the least. The scene I photographed can be seen in this link to a (none Olympus) photo I took in December:

I have to say I do prefer the composition of the above (and Capture One does amazing things with Sony raws). I've included it here for reference because there are, I think, elements of that structure that I think could be mistaken for artefacts.

For the Olympus, first we have the 50MP OOC JPEG, cropped 16:9 and adjusted in Photoshop.

And (hopefully you can access if interested) a link to the full size image:

And the output from processing the 80MP raw file, using LRCC, Adobe Enhance Details, Sensei and finished in Photoshop:

And likewise a link to the full sized file.

Looking at the 80MP file, I noticed the background behind the subject looked a little more blurry. Subtle DoF effects more apparent when viewing the image this large?

Jason, I have yet to try hi res mode, now that at last I have me a decent pod, I'll have to look up how it's done. Is there really a great deal of difference to a normal well focused shot, and is setting up a hassle?

Even if you get a super HiRes photo, to display your image here you have to reduce the size, I wonder if the original clarity is reflected on the screen...…..

Good question, Mark, as images are mostly shared on screen.

It is no more of a pain than any other tripod mounted technique. Points to note:
          • Disables raw by default (needs to be enabled in SCP).
          • Needs remote shutter.
          • But not via the O.I Share App, which disables hi res.
          • Or a timer (enables under Camera 2/Hi res.

The 80MP raw is soft compared to the 50MP shot (though USM did find edges to sharpen when turned up a bit). For best results, it may make sense to downsample a little for final output once raw processing has been done. The overall function is interesting, and capable of good results, but questionable given the very limited range of situations it could actually be employed. Outside shot on a windy day? Best not to bother.
