Re: Vigilance
Cool photo Mark, he does look a bit frog bound.....
Do you get those frogmouthed owls in your patch? I saw and videod a pair in Kinkumber about 10 years ago...

Re: Vigilance
Thanks Mark. Yes we do get the Tawny Frog Mouth here but damned hard to spot. As it happens, I was working the patch last week when a passer by stopped to tell me where he saw one; unfortunately I didn't know exactly where he was talking about, I'd be there in a heartbeat if I did.

Re: Vigilance
Nice shot, the frog must have been hopping mad!

Re: Vigilance
Yes, it's a captive bird in a zoo. It was sitting on the rail next to the path. A keeper came along and posted several mice into it. The coolest bird on the planet!Originally posted by pandora View PostHi Jim, is it a captive bird?
Our Frogmouths are wild birds, so camouflged that they blend with the tree.

Re: Vigilance
Thanks Jim, well shooting captive birds is one way to build one's bird portfolio, I've not visited Melbourne zoo where I believe there's a substantial aviary. That said, my self imposed challenge is to shoot wild birds only, exercising a primeal hunter-gatherer instinct I think.Originally posted by Jim Ford View PostYes, it's a captive bird in a zoo. Re: Vigilance
Yes, I agree with you that it's far more satisfying to get a wild shot, but we don't get many wild Tawny Frog Mouths in the UK (I wish we did)!Originally posted by pandora View PostThat said, my self imposed challenge is to shoot wild birds only, exercising a primeal hunter-gatherer instinct I think.

Re: Vigilance
That's a nice shot of the kookaburra Mark.
There were 'captive' ones in Featherdale Wildlife Park in the west of Sydney, but we were privileged to have one in our yard (well camouflaged except for the other birds annoying it) & the neighbours for a little while (I got some photos one day some years ago with one in my gallery). I've not seen any here again so far.Originally posted by pandora View PostHi Jim, is it a captive bird?

BTW, I hope you're surviving the flooding in the Wang at the moment. I hear the Hume Hwy is closed due to flooding.

Re: Vigilance
Featherdale claims to have the largest collection of Aussie birds species in Oz, and that's a great shot of the tawny frogmouth. I've seen one only one in Tasmania. And yes Ross, we sure are copping some rain and as you've heard; many cars are trapped on the Hume and the rain is still bucketing down as I type. Luckily I knew it was coming this morning and made a dash to the supermarket for some essential food items to wait out the flood, like cream lamington cake!.Originally posted by Ross the fiddler View PostThat's a nice shot of the kookaburra Mark.

Thanks for the comment on the K'burra, although I think the shots of this particular bird are better in Kookaburra in Flight (KIF) thread.
