  • A Pink Rose Bud with Stereo Using Leica 400mm

This is on a plant over 20 years old. Although I prune it each year, severely every two or three years, it produces flowers throughout the year, including Christmas, and grows very tall This bud was about seven feet above the ground.

I had been photographing dragonflies close to it and employed the 400mm for the bud. I thought the blue sky would go well with the pink. From about 10 feet and at f8, the crosseye stereo is surprisingly effective (perhaps a touch exaggerated). I thought the fine dimpling on the sepals might be an artefact and checked back with the flower, finding it to be true capture.

    Olympus EM-1 (Aperture Priority), Panasonic 100 - 400 mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm, f8, ISO 200, hand-held

Good photo that demonstrates the near-macro capability of the Leica 100-400 at its closest focus.

I regularly use mine for butterfly photos, as it reduces the likelihood of disturbing the insect and produces great results with much less trouble

Thanks but that is at about three times the closest focus.

For closest focus see my Ivy Bee shots.

I just checked. That is about right for the lens at 100mm at closest focus. At 400mm the (slightly-opened) flower fills the frame.

Harold I thought your Ivy bee shots were with your 50mm f2 ?
These look pretty good for long range shots with the 100-400. How do you think it would compare with the Oly 40-150 plus 1.4 TC? Oh and have you tried it out with an extension tube for macro?

              Phill,

The second batch were with the 50 + x2 TC.

I carry the 40-150 but not normally for macro subjects, more for general photography. It rarely gets used and would be for zoom function where my viewpoint was restricting. I needed the 400mm to get a shallow angle and not be looking up at the bottom of the bud.

The Lumix G Vario 14-45mm gets more use than the 40-150, but still not much.

I don't see any point in using an extension tube and I don't have any auto m4/3 ones anyway.
