  • First steps with my new toy

Yesterday I gave in and splashed out on a new E-M1 MkII. My finances are going to be a bit hair raising for the next few months but so far I am absolutely delighted with it. I spent most of today trying to make sense of the online manual and setting it up. Blimey it's complicated!

This evening I put the 75-300 II on and headed out to the garden to point it at any birds which might appear. Bearing in mind that I don't really know what I am doing and I am sure the camera is not set up properly yet I am quite pleased with the results. I have obviously got a huge amount to learn but I am quite encouraged. It actually feels as if it could work for BIF shots, unlike my MkI version, and the autofocus is lightning fast.

These are jpegs as I believe my copy of Lightroom 5 won't support the raw files from the MkII. I will have to find a way round that even if it means resorting to DNG Converter.

Very encouraging first shots Ron. The mkii's AF is a massive step up on the mk I and does seem to work very well for BIF.

You'll need a more recent version of LR for sure. If you don't want to do that, use Viewer 3 to make TIFFs and then import into LR.

Adobe DNG can convert the ORF into a DNG for import into LR and is the same convertion that the LR raw uses.

Ron that's brilliant congratulations. Those are excellent shots from the little 75-300 lens.

Lovely shots Ron. I've never managed to get consistent with BIF shots, I've pretty much given up!

Very nice something I found hard to do on the EM1 even with the 40-150 pro
