  • Cuba 142 - Happy Blacksmiths

I have more than a passing interest in smithing so I was very happy to find a blacksmith shop in Old Havana. They were happy to see me too as I came bearing gifts of diamond sharpening steels. They seemed to have very nice new equipment, including a $10,000 power hammer from Spain. I can only assume that someone (maybe an escaped relative) had set them up in business and had all the gear shipped in as it was very, very unusual to see such good kit. Unfortunately they did not seem know what to do with it in terms of traditional forging but the welder and grinder were well used! They were in the process of "fabricating" an "iron bed". I did try my best to give them some pointers in my less than comprehensible Spanish.

    Happy Blacksmiths.

Spot the $10k power hammer and the only, tiny, propane forge.

Traditional smith drawings and my wife's legs benefitting from some of the 7-14mm distortion, nice!

    Welding the bedhead.

    Nearing completion in white paint.

With such basic tools and machines I bet their workmanship is world class too, Andrew!

Interesting set! The middle guy in #1 looks like Heston Blumenthal.... is he the chef? Certainly a lot of empty space in that workshop.
