By popular demand (!!) here are the set of colour images that I took of Fakenham gasworks, which was built in 1846, finished producing gas in 1965, and is now the only intact one in the country. Interesting place to see - and remarkably small, considering it supplied a whole town with gas.

You can see the first water tank to cool the gas/tar mix above the retorts.

The gasometer. The bottom part was full of water, to seal the rising bell tank; the weight of the tank created the pressure to consumers.
