  • Gasworks in colour

By popular demand (!!) here are the set of colour images that I took of Fakenham gasworks, which was built in 1846, finished producing gas in 1965, and is now the only intact one in the country. Interesting place to see - and remarkably small, considering it supplied a whole town with gas.

A gas street lamp (we had these when I was a kid!)

The calorimeter building, which also housed the offices.

    The retorts:

You can see the first water tank to cool the gas/tar mix above the retorts.

    The retort building and condenser:

The tar tank is between the condenser and the building behind it.

The retort and pressure control/meter buildings:

The gasometer. The bottom part was full of water, to seal the rising bell tank; the weight of the tank created the pressure to consumers.

There used to be two gasometers at Fakenham.

    The stop valves:

Thanks for your interest. Any comments very welcome.

Black & White does have its charms but I think the colour version in this case does add so much more to the subject.

I like mono and colour; and only did the ones in the first thread in B&W; I actually quite liked sepia for them, but chickened out and went B&W.

        Interesting how people perceive them!

I'm up for the sepia! Failing that I like the B&W more.

Another vote for colour but I think sepia would work better than mono for this subject.

            Regards.

I much prefer this set in colour, Keith. It contains more visual information about the plant.

But there's something ominous-looking about the Retorts!
