  • Under The Southern Cross

Alone with no co-driver to share the wheel it's a long arduous 1,500km drive (900 mi) from NE Victoria to Brisbane, QLD.
I was in a hurry on the way there so I had prepared my car for roadside camping by removing the front seat to make space for a bed.
After spending a whole day loading food and scores of other necessary items I finally got mobile at 6:00PM and drove 'til I dropped around midnight.

The route from VIC crosses the NSW border at Albury and my first overnight roadside camp was at a rest stop some 400 km northeast of Wangaratta.
Navigating that route in daylight is tricky as there's a network of highways to follow, but by night without my Blackberry GPS I'd have surely got lost!
Keeping both phones charged was no problem with an inverter that plugs into the lighter socket. The car radio auxiliary mode amplified voice guidance.

    1.
All in this set were taken on the way home when I had more time for snapshots, first with the XZ2 until its battery went flat, then I switched to the XZ1.
    2.
This stunning sunset reflected in a natural roadside pond was the lucky photographic break of the trip.

    3.
On the way home my first roadside camp beneath the Southern Cross and the Milky Way
was near Cootamundra, NSW where I and the XZ2 dabbled in a spot of Astrophotography! (star trails due to long exposure)
    4.
The above was shot with the XZ2 on a miniature mini-pod held firmly on the roof of my car - 60 secs @ f/6.3 @ ISO800
    5.
Above and below were both at the same location where I camped overnight. As you can see, lots of B-Doubles!
    6.
About 75% of traffic was B-Doubles, they are surprisingly quiet to the hearing impaired
    7.
Somewhere north of Temora, NSW a highway patrol car tailed me while he checked me out as an exemplary driver and upstanding citizen on his on board computer, no doubt.
    8.
I only wish I had shot that patrol car as it overtook me ... what a scoop! All that stopped me was Roadworks!

Nice to see that you are off on your adventures again, Mark. That sunset is magnificent and the foreground reflections really make the shot.

Interesting shots and commentary Mark, as usual! +1 on the sunset too.

Sunset is a corker well shot Mark. The star shots are pretty good too with the XZ-2. Nice to see the southern cross for a change. This looks to be shaping up to be a good adventure, take care. Looking forward to the next instalments.
Edit: Mark sorry I read your posts out of order and didn't realise the reason for this trip. Not an adventure you really want to have hope everything works out well.

Unfortunately all not an adventure. Sandra is quite unwell in Brisbane. See marks other thread. But indeed good pics.

Like the sunset...wow! Nice to see that you have the curse of modern motoring too - roadworks with traffic lights!

Thanks Ross and Phill. Not the type of adventure that I needed as you say. Sandra not yet out of the woods but stable. At this stage it is unknown what impairment if any she will be left with.

Roadworks with traffic lights are a common phenomenon. When one lane is closed they regulate the traffic autonomously.
