  • We Cycled Melbourne

Yesterday - Barry and I took our bikes to Melbourne on the train, just the two of us to cycle round the Bay

    1.

After the three hour trip from North eastern Victoria to Southern Cross we headed for Beaconsfield Parade, Port Melbourne.

    2.

We cycled down to Sandringham in perfect weather, a slight sea breeze and autumn sunshine was the order of the day.

    3.

The cycle paths are smooth and beautifully maintained, this surely is a cyclist's city except for one who chose not to use the cycle path.

Below was a hit or miss shot from my bike as I cycled past (no shadenfreude intended).
The technique is similar to how Clint Eastwood uses a Smith & Wesson to shoot people.

    4.

On heading back to the city we stopped for a photo op beside the river with Melbourne's Crown Casino as a backdrop (which is as close as I ever get to gambling)

    5. .

It was in all a wonderful day and I am looking forward to my next trip to Melbourne when I plan to spend a longer time to show you more.

    6.

Aside from being a great place for a bite to eat, there's also plenty to feast your eyes on along the Yarra banks!

    7.
OH MOMMA MIA! ! ! - A sneaky waist level tilt screen shot as not to draw their attention to the guy with an XZ-2 !

Don't fancy any of those Mark, but the pics are great.
Nice and sunny I see, I'd nearly forgotten what the effects of the sun looks like.

Interesting set of photos & I can see what your taste in the opposite sex would be with the 2nd & last photos. To each their own!

My interest is strictly professional - it's the old press photographer in me rearing his ugly head, mate!

+ As I'm not a misogynist I think the sculpture, and all the ladies in the last are absolutely charming, Ross.

The shot of the ladies is very good, it's got the Beryl Cook look to it. There's quite a lot going on to engage the viewer, two separate conversations and the end lady (on our right as viewed) sort of left out of it. It's a very good capture, one I would have been proud to have taken. Take your water mark off and I'll claim it as one of mine.
                Well done indeed.

I think Mark is getting some shut-eye, or should be according to my watch. It's a 'wing' mirror Chevvy, both Mark and his companion have the same.

I did wonder if it was, and maybe a camera too ? just thinking it is a good idea for on cycles, bi and motor for me

Yes it is night for Mark and he must be tired out after that journey & cycle ride

                        Re: We Cycled Melbourne

The first photo certainly gives the impression that Melbourne thinks a lot of its cyclists. Well done on the planning and execution front and the dedication involved in your leisure pursuits... and for bringing us great pictures of it.

Actually, the camera is a very good idea as some drivers have been known to drive into cyclists & the police & the insurance company say nothing can be done without proof & it seems it has become somewhat necessary with a head video camera (GoPro) to have the a*** h*** drivers charged.

This one happened 5 years ago on the M4 in the west of Sydney, but I don't think a camera would have made much difference here though. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/truck-plou...0410-rzs4.html

Thank you Steve, I've not heard of Beryl Cook but nice to know that her work has a Mark Greenhill look.

As you observe, the conversations going on between them are engaging and make for interesting speculation as to what they may have been about.
A close friend of mine suspects they are all related and maybe so.

I have actually reprocessed the file to balance the leg highlights on the two ladies on the right with the legs of the other three.

Chevvy - the sculpture in the 2nd image is titled, "The Swimmer" - it is nice that local councils support our artists in this way.

It was my first Melbourne ride and it won't be the last.
I am looking forward to the new perspective of exploring the city on my bike after having spent most of my career years driving through it.

I see that Steve has answered your query on the "wing" mirror correctly.

Thanks Steve - you were right about me taking some much needed shut-eye after a long day yesterday made even longer by the train
that had to stop for 55 minutes due to some "safety issue" with the locomotive.
You are also well informed about cyclist's accessories. Curiously we saw not one Melbourne rider using a wing mirror and were asked by a number of people
what they were. They must be a fairly recent innovation as they seem to be just coming into vogue in the region where we live.

Hi OM - as mentioned in my opening thread, Melbourne has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure and it is obviously paying off as there are growing thousands of riders using it.
The health and safety benefits are very real.

If you haven't done already, I suggest you Google Beryl Cook, her paintings of 'portly' women are rather special.
