  • Outback Road Trains - Past and Present

Freighters, or Road Trains as they are also known, are part of the Outback landscape, they carry many different types of loads.
But how things have changed over the last century as the exhibits at the Ilfracombe Tractor Museum illustrate.
Just one of many highlights of my recent Outback tour. All images shot with the XZ-2 Location: See Key map

A somewhat miraculous uncropped grab shot taken hastily as the road train flew past at a rate of knots. I actually wanted to show the entire length of it.

Excellent museum, love the trailers with almost "train" wheels.

Ed and John -While reviewing some of my old posts for something to contribute to Chevvy's "Best 3 for 2014'', I came upon your unanswered threads. I didn't purposely ignore them, must have just slipped under the radar. Belated Thanks to you both!

Interesting set Mark, as John says Big Boy's toys, Tonka comes to mind when I look at some of these images

Cheer Huw Can't recall seeing any Tonka's in the outback but they're certainly in that league. Most common rigs seen outback are the road trains.

Ah Mark that would be 'Tonka' toys, I remember my younger brother had one (late sixties).

That's quite a collection! We saw a Spitfire being moved at Cardiff Services earlier this year, but that was small compared to these!

That Spitfire would have been a photo op, Amanda - I hope you didn't miss it!

Thanks Chevvy - yes indeed, the first is a great looker isn't it! I daresay that upper sleeping cabin would be a tad more comfortable than my Pulsar's!

I must say that Nick (from what you tell of his activities) must be a very talented and practical man. I can well imagine what a good match you two make!
