  • The QANTAS Longreach Museum - QLD

Entering the town of Longreach the first thing I saw was a huge decommissioned QANTAS Boeing 747-200.
Although I knew that Longreach was the original home of QANTAS it came as a surprise to see this airplane in such an atypical setting.
Not having done my homework (not 'atypical' of me!) I simply thought that it had landed a cargo of Japanese / Chinese / American tourists to the town
and not realising it is a QANTAS Museum I hastened to shoot some pictures before it took off! I really wish I had not missed the opportunity to look it over.

The town itself looks very friendly and I imagine it is a popular tourist resort. Lyn loves it I believe and I'm sure she
or Sandra will be able to show more of it than I can! Sandra is actually in Longreach right now as I write.

Quaintarse is not my favourite airline - we were delayed 43 hours at LHR when trying to get to Oz. Due entirely to them not having a spare crew in London during times of bad weather. Their claim of never having had a crash (according to Rainman) is that they never fly.

I am so sorry you didn't go in to the museum Mark. We didn't do the tour, but the presentations in the museum were very good. Of course Winton was the true birthplace of Qantas - usurped by Longreach.
I will eventually get to Longreach in my "Winter Trip" posts.
      Love that fence!

        Blame that Irish boss then.

My experience was in December 1991 so do not know who the boss was then.

Nice. Ive flown on a couple of the older Qantas 747, when they were leased to Air Pacific. Great aircraft/nice photos of them.

but the memory of disappointment and discomfort last far longer than that of a smooth no hassles journey - I have had three single flights to or from Oz on Quaintarse none were pleasant and the 43 hour delay plumbed unexplained depths of ineptitude by the operator.
Whereas I have hundreds of flights on BA and none stand out in my memory as bad or uncomfortable they all blur into a series of smooth events.
