  • No misleading title, just gates and a link.

I discovered today that wrought Iron field gates are mostly only found in ireland. Here's a link to a Utube video explaining a little about these field gates that some of you might find interesting.

Meanwhile I have a few more shots for posting of gates I spotted on my travels.

    Fascinating Conor.

Explains why I've never seen such beautiful farm gates over here. Great that these unique items are being preserved and recorded.

Isn't it wonderful the the knowledge one can gain on this forum.

    Regards.

I'm amazed at the number of innovative designs. In the old days it must have been the Rileys keeping up with the O'Flahertys!

It's a very interesting subject to photograph for me with all the different designs. I have yet to find a nicer one than the first one I posted. I might have to talk to the owner and do a trade for a modern type and take it home!! There are plenty lying in ditches and at the back of out-houses, disgarded for modern 5 and 7 bar galvanised steel gates which is a pity. When I run out of gates I'm going to start posting photos of another subject unique to Ireland..........Leprechauns! They're everywhere here

Thanks to both Peter and yourself Mark for your coments.

Can't believe I just sat and watched a 5 minute video of still images on gates and really enjoyed it. There were some wonderful old shots in there plus a very informative narrative. As Peter said fascinating and what a wonderful and diverse resource this site is. That's a lovely gate shot you followed the video with as well Conor. Looks like you've found yourself a photographic project. Thanks for posting this.

A few minutes well spent, Conor. that is fascinationg. I didn't realise that wrought iron is no longer produced anywhere in Europe.

Really impressed with this thread, thanks Conor.

Aha! A challenge for those of us in other countries!
I take up your gauntlet ... hope to find at least something soon ...

Our farmers seem criminally lazy, or just not proud of their fittings I guess. Welded steel tube everywhere!
