Re: We're no Different
I've seen an adult magpie knock a younger bird over when it got fed up with the youngster endlessly following the parent around and screeching for food. I thought at the time that a month or so earlier the parent would have been defending that same youngster by swooping everything that moved within a few hundred metres of the nest.
The youngster lay on its side a few moments, grumbling a little more quietly, and the parent wandered away.Rosemary (EvaWood)

Those photos wouldn't be of a typical day on thread 1022 of a certain other photography forum, would they ?

Thank you Lyn, I am always impressed with your knowledge of flora and avifauna. As for me, I am at times hard put to remember my own name ... it's a worry.
I thought I had recorded something rare if not unique, perhaps a startling contribution to natural science, until once again you came along to bust me bubble !

Oh dear, you poor fellow - now I feel bad!Originally posted by pandora View PostThank you Lyn, I am always impressed with your knowledge of flora and avifauna. As for me, I am at times hard put to remember my own name ... it's a worry.

I really didn't mean to sound like Little Miss Knowall! Since the photography bug bit, I have enjoyed the birding side of it immensely, and this has led to a thirst for knowledge for trying to find out more about the birds and their behavior.
Re the Maggies - for many, many years we had a family of them who claimed our backyard as part of their territory. We became very familiar with them, recognizing different birds, and following their youngsters every year. Several used to appear at the back door and claim food treats.
And about 2 years ago, they completely deserted us! Almost overnight it seemed, and we do wonder where they went and why?
Without them the smaller birds have claimed the garden and bring their own joy.
My theory is that as our area has built up with more people and houses (and pets) the Maggies needed more space and have moved out to more open land.
Don't be too hard on their behaviour, a lot of the time it is more show than anything, and the intruder will pick itself up and fly away, having learned a lesson the hard way!
If you are still with me, thank you, I didn't mean to prattle on!

[QUOTE=Floribunda;217468]I don't call that prattle, Lyn. I found the story on on your Magpies and their mysterious and sudden disappearance, enthralling. And you never come across as a know all, in spite of the fact that you do know a helluva lot more than I could ever wish to cram into my overly thick skull!
And you are right, the intruder did break free and fly away pursued by the assailants. I captured that on the XZ's HD video and will mail you a dvd if you wish to see it - so long as you promise to make no more disparaging remarks on Tasmania, or I might forget to be nice! ! !

Re: We're no Different
A series worth showing.
Would you be referring to that almost forgotten funny little island somewhere down south shaped like an apple? Oh, that's right, it's called a state even though it's small!Originally posted by pandora View Postso long as you promise to make no more disparaging remarks on Tasmania, or I might forget to be nice! ! !

What do they call it now?
Never mind. There's a couple of other islands to the south east of us that like to call themselves a country even though they're pretty much like a couple of extra Aussie states since so many of them live here anyhow.
Oh, that's right, my daughter is over there at the moment.
Isn't it nice night to be among friends?

Now you are being SO nice - I am suspicious!
And thank you for the kind DVD offer - I don't want you to go to that expense though. Add to it with more film and then I may be tempted to purchase a baby camera yet!
