  • Lovely Australian 'Summer Beauty'!

I bet you had these on your mind!

(Sightseers at Govetts Leap, Blackheath overlooking the Gross Valley of the Blue Mountains, NSW)

    Or these.

(Celebrating Australia Day in Springwood, lower Blue Mountains, NSW)

    No! You got it wrong!

This is the Eucalyptus 'Summer Beauty'!
Eucalyptus 'Summer Beauty' is a hybrid between selected parents of Eucalyptus (Corymbia) ficifolia and E. ptychocarpa.

These are the buds that started (it's still in the pot to be planted tomorrow).

Some buds started to open today, from this

    to this.

    And from this

    to this.

I'll add another photo after it is planted with more of the flowers open.

    Thanks for looking.

Well, I didn't have those on my mind but I do now. You sure have some tasty Sheilas down there, Ross!

Luckily the real Summer Beauty has helped take my mind off them again. Excellent pictures of an exquisite plant, a real joy to behold.

Oh - aren't you the funny one!
This should be a stunner when it grows into a tree Ross. Lovely golden stamens and you have some nice shots here.
I love the cap lifting off the bloom, and the final two photos.

I thought they were worth a showing anyhow.
Let's hope it (the tree) will continue to be a beauty in the ground too!

I confess I did crop those shots a little.

We're hoping it will be successful too. The caps are always intriguing & when walking under a heavily blossuming tree (referring to other Eucalypts), the crunch under the feet (if in something like a car park) of all the caps on the ground releases the beautiful woody smell. These 'pixie' caps are cute (being 1cm across).

              Thanks for all the replies.

She's probably more taken with the deep valley views of the Grose Valley at that point (that is not seen here, but maybe I'll post a thread of it).
Actually, that was the first photo.

We have over 500 species of Eucalypts here with some of them being reclassified & renamed Corymbia, although are often still sold as Eucalypts (some of us object to using the new uninspiring name & how dare they try & change it from our iconic Eucalyptus! ), so I'm sure you'll have some Eucalypt's available there, but maybe some of the more difficult to grow trees from Western Australia may not be easy to get. The above tree has been grafted onto a vigorous root stock because of the ground variations that we might plant them into. I don't know what the root stock of this one is, but I have a feeling they might use E. (Corymbia) Maculata sometimes.

Thanks for all the nice comments again.

Looking for info on the root stock Ross I came upon this short article. It doesn't tell us Aussies anything new, but I thought it may be of interest to other nature lovers on the forum.
It reminded me of the time one of our neighbours planted a Mountain Ash in their small backyard. I had to do some hard talking to get them to remove it!

Lyn, Thanks for the extended info I believe I spotted a Euclypt, just felled at our local park, on Wednesday last It must have been dead; diseased or dangerous - because otherwise, your in REAL trouble cutting down such a huge tree here

I had no idea, that there was more than ONE variety of this species

We knew but still planted trees without thinking, like the E. Scoparias (free trees from the council area we had moved from) down our driveway (battleaxe) that had to be cut down. There is one left inside our front yard & it has chosen to grow bigger than most typical dimensions given being over 12m now & 2' (600mm) across the trunk at the base.
(Linked to my gallery) You can see the stump in front of the last one to come down (smaller now without the thick bark that was on it). Our neighbour did some talking too, but we took our time to remove them at the time (some of us never learn).

It's going to cost a fair bit when it has to go.
