Ah yes - Michael Palin - Gorgeous man. Moving right along ..........

Heard a noise over the back fence this week - not a bird in the trees.


On closer inspection - we don't call them lumberjacks, but tree fellers. In summer the gum trees are notorious, and dangerous, as they drop boughs quite unexpectedly. Consequently the boughs are trimmed, especially if they overhang houses.



I love the chainsaw dangling as he climbs to an advantage point.



Marking the saw line and then the bough to be cut is tied.



And then the bough is gently lowered so as not to fall on the house!



Sorry for the slightly OOF last one - I must have been getting shaky watching him!

We have to get four dead trees down near our house. The two eucalypts or gum trees to come down are commonly referred as one being a 'stringybark' & the other a 'bloodwood' while the other trees are Turpentine trees. These can virtually explode into flames within bushfires & sitting within 2 metres from our house, I think it a good idea for them to go (especially now they're dead). Strangely, the cut wood (dried) does not burn as well in a wood fire (heater).

But there's only one of him!

You can't see the other person that would (I would think) be on the ground.

If the tree fellers are good enough, they can drop the top of the tree into the ground like this one (what was left of a Brush Box tree next door to us).

It's a quote from an old (well, prehistoric) joke, Ross. A couple of blokes are looking for work and see a sign - "Tree fellers wanted". One turns to the other and says "Shame there's only two of us."

Looks dodgy to me!

His safety rope goes at nearly 45 degrees to the adjacent tree. If he loses his grip he'll swing back and hit the tree hard, but I suppose it's better than falling!

He also hasn't a safety helmet on - but I suppose as he's an Australian it doesn't matter if he hits his head!

Seems this is a world wide trade, can't believe he is not wearing gloves or a helmet, but he does have safety specs

I think gloves could get in the way? At least this home owner called in someone else - you wouldn't believe how many home owners do this themselves!
