  • Cute Baby Hedgehog

The third is a quality image - the first two just "enhance the narrative"

This darling Baby Hedgehog, less than 4 inches long, extended was out on our front lawn last Friday It was bitterly cold and he seemed to be hunting food. Greenthumb have recntly 'tined' and scarrified the green stuff and so access to worms was quite easy

However, we put out Cat Food (Chicken in Jelly goes down very well ) ... in a dish under a small tree for the many hedgehogs we hear and see in the garden this little chap I have captured "tongue out" with much glee

It was a dark, dreary November day ... light was poor - but the children noticed him scurrying about the garden and under a step

Her came out again the next day ... and I dared to use the flash ... did you know Hedgehogs have BLUE Eyes - we were concerned he has "no fat" for Hibernation - so we picked him up and placed him in a box full of shavings and shredded paper and hope he survives

Well done for your rescue she/he may need more food before going for its winter sleep. Will listen out to see how it gets on.

As has been mentioned, it won't survive hibernation unless it weighs 600g. There are people that overwinter hedgehogs. If you want I can put you in touch with them through http://wildaboutbritain.co.uk/.

Hi Jim, Ed and John, I fear he is not with us anymore

I just went out to the "box" and lifted all the newspaper shredded and he is on the shavings, nose out not in a tight ball ...

I have put more Chicken in Jelly in there for him and water and packed him up and if the food is still there when we get home ... well

I dont think he weighs anywhere near a 1 Lb jar of jam

Yes unfortunately they need specialist care if not heavy enough and in hibernation by this time. I've had the same experience myself and it is sad.

                Re: Cute Baby Hedgehog

I feel very sad ... when we saw it first last Friday, we said "should we take it in, feed it up and winter/hibernate it?" ... two neighbours suggested we should leave it ... now I wish we had not

Should this happen again, I shall contact the Hedgehogs place, Ms TiggyWinkles and take it here as they know what to really do

Thanks for all your kind advice - I shall look at him on Tuesday next and let you know

                  Re: Cute Baby Hedgehog

Oh dear Chevvy, I feel sad too.
Such a cute little thing. I hope he survives, but from the others' responses it doesn't sound good. Do let us know the outcome.
I do my best with wildlife too, but as John says, , sometimes by the time we find them there is an existing problem, and luckily we have groups to turn to as it sounds you do too.
But you never know - I will keep my fingers crossed for you both!

If it's still alive it will need to be overwintered without going into hibernation - it just isn't big enough to survive.

Do you want me to post a message on the 'Wild About Britain'? There are people that overwinter hedgehogs and will travel a long way to collect them. Hedgehogs are seriously endangered and need all the help that can be provided.
