A couple of photos from today.

Came across this cat when walking the dog this evening. It was completely dark apart from the light from an arc light coming from the left. Taken with the E-M5 and 20mm/1.7 wide open at ISO 1600.



This morning I got out my ancient Jessops 240TBZ flash that I used to use on my OM1 and took this shot of Tim in his favourite place, his bed, with the flash bounced off the ceiling. E-M5, 20mm, f1.7, 1/250th (had to do the exposure manually, of course, no TTL).



It's a shame the E-M5 doesn't have a standard flash cable connection like my E-1 does so I could use the Jessops flash off camera.

You should be able find a hotshoe-to-X sync-cable adapter fairly easily. Of course that means that you are plugging the flash into the camera so you still have to beware high trigger voltages - but since you are using it on the hotshoe anyway, if that was going to be a problem you would already have had it.

Of course that means that you are plugging the flash into the camera so you still have to beware high trigger voltages - but since you are using it on the hotshoe anyway, if that was going to be a problem you would already have had it.

I would be hesitant to use the flash again directly because of the risk of it being a higher voltage than can comfortable be handled by the camera. A voltmeter can be used to the measure the trigger voltage or this Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe unit from B&H would be the safest way of using old flash units.

No TTL control at all, of course, but in my very limited experience these work well and are useful for both off-camera flash and for using old units whose trigger voltage might fry the camera. I used them in an evening class where we had some antique Courtenay studio flashes which I definitiely didn't want to plug into the E-3.

Phottix Aster is what I use, they work fine. I've given up on the Oly wireless system. Not much use outdoors!

Thanks for all the suggestions, John, Ross and John. I have been looking at flash triggers recently but haven't been able to decide which to go for, so that's a great help, thanks.

I've also been toying with the idea of getting a Metz 50 AF-1 flash. I so rarely use flash, apart from occasionally using the clip-on flash for fill-in, that I'm not sure I can justify the cost. Perhaps I'll get the triggers first and see if they work with the old Jessops flash.
