  • MELBOURNE - The Wetta the Betta

We spent the past few days in Melbourne, arriving at Southern Cross Station mid morning in torrential rain.
Check-in at our South Yarra hotel was not available until 1400 so we swanned around town for a bit, enjoying a change from the bush.

Below: At Flinders Street Station, the main surburban rail terminal near the heart of the city.
    2.
    Above: St Pauls Cathedral
Below: A trendy coffee shop in one of many of the city's alley ways. As you can see, photographically the light was appalling but appealing.
    3.
One thing that struck me was the trendiness of Melbourne's fashion conscious - I am seriously overdue for a makeover !
    4.
Above: St Pauls Cathedral. Even at its gloomiest Melbourne is an exciting place to be with a camera.
The PEN is a marvellous pocket-sized travel camera that punches above its weight.

The entire 5 day shoot was shot with the E-PL3 + m14-42mm kit, so if the shutter appears tardy at times, that is the reason why.
Undoubtedly the 12-60 would have been great if not for its weight - travel photography is always a compromise.

Interesting and quite different to your normally blue sky photos Mark. I am impressed with the colours you got in this weather. Were these taken or processed in "vivid" mode?

Yep, that's wet Melbourne. If it's any consolation, we are getting a little damp up here too, but it was a beautiful weekend.

Some lovely shots showing Melbourne including the last one that even though the IQ is poor, the subject material was interesting & worth showing.

You know, falk, it is a welcome change to be shooting wet cityscapes in Vivid mode. No hard shadows, no high density range.

As nice as they are, blue skies can get photographically boring, which is why I enjoy winter.

          Thanks falk.

That last shot was shot at long range and is quite a severe crop, Ross. For convenience (and with Janette in tow) I opted to do the entire Melbourne shoot with the PEN and the m14=42 kit. I had the E-3 + 12-60mm backup at the hotel but it never fired a shot in anger !
