  • A pleasant walk and a free meal!

I'm very fortunate to live on a street which is just 200 yards away from my local river...

The only slight blot on the landscape is a disused factory at the bottom of the street, but that's now hidden from sight behind the long since closed gates...

At first it was a horrible eyesore, a huge mound of concrete blocks and soil dumped behind the gates to deter travellers setting up camp, but over the past couple of years the ground has been populated with grass, ferns and wild flowers and is a haven for small birds. It doesn't look like much now, but in a few weeks time it will be full of poppies and dog roses...normally I would have expected it to be literally buzzing with bees, butterflies and other insects, but it was a bit on the cool side today and the sun was hiding behind the clouds.

Turning the corner, there's a nice path with several benches overlooking the river...the hedge you can see in the background is the hedge surrounding the factory, keeping it totally hidden from view.

...and right in front of that bench is one of the best free meals I've had in ages!

Wild garlic (allium ursinum)...also known as ramsons and various other names. The flowers are simply delicious added to salads (as are the young leaves), with a mild and delicate garlic/chive taste. The bulbs are edible too, but although it's abundant where I live, I prefer to leave them to produce more flowers and leaves the following year.

Unfortunately it's rather like spinach, and the carrier bag full of young leaves that I brought home was swiftly reduced to a starter for two when I wilted it with some olive oil...delicious though!

Along with the wild garlic, I also gathered some young dandelion leaves and freshly sprouted nettle tops...all is currently simmering on the stove in anticipation of the best potato and leek soup ever!

Tomorrow's treat will be dandelion flowers, dipped in egg, coated with flour and crushed wild garlic flowers and deep fried in hot olive oil...go on, try it! You'll be pleasantly surprised...!

Hopefully that will be served with freshly caught brown trout, straight out of the river and in the pan within ten minutes...I've just dug out my fly rod and am preparing for an early session!

This is a perfect place to fly fish...any rain and you can simply hide under the bridge!

...and it's where this little river produced my personal best brown trout of 4lb 3oz a few years ago...here's hoping!

After a pretty horrible and unsettling couple of weeks, it was really lovely to just wander round with my camera, enjoying the little pleasures in life.

Sounds lovely, Janet! I really like the wild garlic too, although it only grows a few mild places in Norway.

      I enjoyed your story Janet.
Not far from us I forage roadside fennel, apples and quinces from wild trees, blackberries and watercress. It must satisfy the hunter/gatherer instinct, because they always taste better than supermarket fare.
Love the tranquil spot by the bridge where you fish. Looks great.

Lyn, although the spot where I fish looks nice and tranquil, appearances can be deceptive...

The bridge is actually carrying the main road through the town, and the steps you can see lead straight up and into into the car park of our local supermarket!

The area down near the riverbank is currently undergoing huge changes....the riverside walk won't be affected, but turn 180 degrees and you're faced with a building site where some of our lovely old brick buildings and mills have been demolished to make way for a massive Tesco superstore, currently under construction despite all the objections from local residents.

Actually, you've given me an idea.....I needed some inspiration to get my photo mojo working again, and I think you've just done it!

Janet ... what a veritable urban wilderness you have on your doorstep, with lots more photo ops by the looks of it. I shall watch for your future postings from that interesting place.

Re: A pleasant walk and a free meal!

A lovely set of photos (what, no spiders? ) & narrative. It's nice when pleasant locations are still amongst busier places. We've had controversial plans in our township too with Woolworths Supermarket wanting to pull down our town hall to incorporate it in a new complex, but it is used for markets as well as various concerts & musicals etc., which has not pleased too many people.

The only river near us is the Nepean River (20 mins drive away) & after all the summer rain that we have had, the dam (Warragamba) overflowed after many years, bringing trout into the river. A number of local people were soon taking advantage of the spoils it brought.

The food gathering sounds interesting, but my wife is getting around to seriously planting our herb garden to add some fresh things to our table. I will have to investigate the wild garlic a little more & the use of the flowers. I know Blue Tongue lizards & Bearded Dragons love the Dandelion flowers, but I hadn't thought to add it to our diet too.

Yes great little narative Janet and I love shots showing the mix between industry and nature. How about showing the contrast in scene you described in words in some more posts?

Re: A pleasant walk and a free meal!

Well, here's part of the scene...the steps down to the river at the end of the riverside walk...

However, at the top of the steps, this is what you find...

The trolley park for the supermarket...the sign on the left says "Path liable to flooding"...they're not joking! Although the river is a good 15 to 20 feet below, it's a spate river and heavy rainfalls have been known to make the level rise enough to cover that path! I've no complaints about this particular supermarket...it's only small and has been there for as long as I can remember...it's the big one being developed behind it that's causing me some worry.

Our friendly little Co-op store will not be able to compete with the huge superstore once it's opened, and my worry is that it will close with its site being flattened and used for a petrol station...

At the start of the riverside walk, right at the bottom of my street, this is the view across the river...

...and this is one of the fine old stone built factories along the way...

Some of these buildings would be ideally suited to conversions to flats, with a lovely view across the river, but no, we've got this monstrosity growing daily instead...

I walk this path daily on my way to work, but it's always strictly "eyes left" to avoid seeing what greedy developers are doing to this lovely little place. Still, it's not all doom and gloom as they are not going to be allowed to develop right down to the waterside...at the moment! The store is due to open later this year...I just hope that the extra volume of traffic doesn't have too much effect on my little wildlife haven...

All these photos were taken this morning, thanks to Lyn and Phil D giving me the incentive to get out with my camera again! Given how fast things are changing, I think it would be good to document it....something I should have started doing long before the developers started knocking the old buildings down.

It's not all doom and gloom though...if I turn right out my house instead of left, then I end up in the same place in the end, but go through here instead...
