  • 5 Frames a Second C-AF Test

For those interested and going on from my "E-1 Action Shots And A Surprising Observation" thread, I have now using the E-30 put it to the test.

And can unequivocally say that leaving IS on when using C-AF is detrimental to the predictive focusing.

I used exactly the same settings on the E-30 as I used with the E-1 yesterday

My hit rate went up considerably with 70% being usable and although they were not as bitingly sharp as the E-1 images I put this down to the frame rate of the E-1 being only 3 frames a second compared to the E-30's 5 frames a second.

This is a sequence of five frames of Gabe running full tilt towards the camera.

A big improvement ove what I was getting with the IS left switched on.
    Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

Have you tried C-AF and IS using L mode for continuous shooting? Also, which release priority mode are you using?

When I was at the white water canoeing and kayaking trials recently with an E-5 I had a high keeper rate using C-AF and H speed continuous shooting, with IS on. I was using the diamond cluster mode as the AF point. I found the 50-200 was better than the 90-250, possibly because of the speed of SWD focusing.

Those are very good shot,s, four and five are brilliant. Even though I don,t have a dog at present I have tried these shots with little success.

Well done for the test and final images.

      Best wishes.........Alan

Hi Ian, I was using C-AF with release priority on and after checking it was set L3 mode, though i have used HS previously.

Those are great pics and I have shot that subject my self though it was a few years ago and it is very different animal from the shots I have been doing .

To be honest a small dog like Gabe (small target) coming head on who can hit over 20mph when he gets going is a real test of the speed of predictive AF and having IS on at high shutter speeds just makes it worse in this scenerio.

Big dog and cars are much easier.

Best results would probably come with the 50-200 SWD lens (which I don't have) to keep up with the focus change & I don't have the mark 1 40-150, but I suppose the mark 2 would work OK for that (but maybe not quite as sharp as the mark 1). The 70-300 is not quick enough for these sort of shots (at least in my trial), but next time I will try with IS off (with the 40-150 lens) & in a star pattern (& maybe L at 3 frames/sec.).

I'd love that lens if I could afford it Ross.

I'll also try the 70-300mm at a later date but in all honesty I chose the Mk1 for its better light gathering , half a stop may not sound much but it can make a difference.

I wonder how the Olympus OM-D E-M5 would cope with this?

If any one is willing to lend me one, me and Gabe are willing to test it out.

              Paul,
I had to laugh when I saw this as just this morning my son took this of our dog Zack working up a head of steam to get out of bed.

Great action shots - your dog Gabe seems to want to be photographed. The eyes are focussed on the lens - is there a biscuit hanging from the camera?

LOL Jamie, that reminds me of me.

Looks like your son has the makings of a good photographer.
