  • Mystery Plant

A brutal looking beast. This stem was about 2 inches across and about 12 foot high with a spread through the undergrowth that put the Triffids to shame.
Lots of baby ones growing in clumps by daddy as well.

Anyone know anything about it please ?

That does look like a vicious beast. If you have a photo of the leaves & overall bush, it would probably be helpful to ID it (flowers are even better when they're out too).

      Re: Mystery Plant....Pic added.

Thanks Ross......returned today and hunted it out.
Really dark in the undergrowth so had to use the flash....must have looked strange if anyone was watching.....a pair of feet sticking out of the shrubbery and the plants all lighting up....lol
Anyway this is the leaves...did not see any buds/flowers though.

        Re: Mystery Plant

While I don't know what it is, this should help somebody else identify it. The glaucous stems should also help.

Your clambering around the bush (or shrubs) could have made a nice photo subject for someone else. Sometimes photographers antics can make for an interesting shot.

I hope someone else can shed some light on its ID for you.

Don't know what it is Keith but it perhaps resembles a bramble in some respects? A mutant or non indigenous variant.

          Hope you find out soon

Looks like a bramble sucker, perfectly ordinary bramble (blackberry) spreading through the undergrowth.

That appears to be a bramble on steroids then. With that stem being 2" (or should that be 2cm) across & looking like new growth, I would hate to try & clear that one out.

It certainly has the Blackberry way of managing to "grab hold" of me as I manoeuvre around it ...but the leaves are not like one and it grows upright !

Suppose it could be another form of one though.

Could be an interesting battle as it's growing in the middle of Himalayan Balsam which is slowly taking over the woods.

                  Re: Mystery Plant

I think it's a variety of Blackberry called Rubus cockburnianus. The white stems are used to give some colour in the winter.

                    Re: Mystery Plant

I would say it is definitely a bramble - botannically Rubus genus.

There is a cultivated form called Rubus cockburnianus which looks very similar to your example - picture here:

So this could be an escaped item or a hybrid would be my guess

This does look like it...Thanks......it's growing in the middle of Lickey Hills Country Park and the only way I can think it has got there is by someone planting it,.....or I suppose birds could have taken a seed there ?

A bit of Blackberry Bashing might be in order at the same time as the Balsam bashing.

Sounds like a job for a chainsaw & brushcutter & pretty good protective clothing.
