  • At dusk in Sydney.

Of course the first photo has to be - The Bridge. Hopefully a different view showing some original houses in the foreground.

The Conservatorium of Music - built by Francis Greenway - a pardoned convict and designer of many of Sydney's landmark buildings.

Kirribilli House - The residence of the Australian Prime Minister when in Sydney.

    Re: At dusk in Sydney.

A South Australian in Sydney & with some lovely shots of the harbour region!

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is a haunt of my past when I was doing the higher grades on violin there (when it was known as the NSW State Conservatorium of Music before it combined with Sydney University). Originally the horse stables & resident for staff of the Government House, it was later converted for its present use. Today it has an underground (partly) area to the right & rear of the main building for the teaching studios, school class rooms etc., but when I was there, there was a two storey building made out of basic concrete block bricks with poor sound insulation for each room of teaching studios on an arc at the back of the historic building site with a perimeter road going right around the complex. It would have to be much nicer there now with that gone & the newer rooms underneath (I haven't been through the site since it was done & still don't know the extent of it).
Here is an old aerial photo of the site showing the studios at the back (viewed from the back).

If you're interested, more can be read about it here.

Thanks for showing your photos Lyn & bringing back some great memories.

Lovely shots, Lyn. That bridge really dominates the surrounding buildings, great viewpoint.

        Re: At dusk in Sydney.

        Hello Lyn,

Ross beat me to a reply - but a South Australian (from near the Barossa region?) taking good photos in Syndey. Have to say, showed these pics to my wife who loves Oz (so do I) - started her off again. Been to Oz many times, particularly love Adelaide and area in SA - wife has total soft spot for Sydney and harbour area. Climbed the bridge twice.
Last there Dec 2009 and they were throwing patterned lights onto the buildings in the evening, including the Conservatorium, with the patterns changing every 5 mins - a few shots below to show you what I mean. They were really effective!

As you say different view of an icon with the bridge - saw the Govenor's house from the ferry tour of the harbour.

Thanks for bringing back the memories.

How interesting Ross! Thanks for that info. Do you still play the violin?

We were wondering if the building had anything to do with Government house, being right next door.

I was lucky with these shots re my positioning, as I took the Conservatorium from the 12th floor of the Intercontinental Hotel where we were spending the night before departing on our recent cruise. From ground level the building would look quite different.

Glad it bought back some memories!

Thanks Jeremy - these shots are just beautiful and the building is ideal for this sort of thing.
Hahndorf is in the Adelaide Hills - 35kms from the CBD on the freeway - 90kms from the Barossa Valley. Settled by German Immigrants, just like the Barossa.
North Terrace is Adelaide's main boulevard graced with lovely old buildings, and at certain times the authorities use these for patterned lights too.
I am ashamed to say (like a lot of things close to home) I have never seen them - great photo op, and I must try harder!
                  Glad you enjoyed the set.

Thanks John - I was lucky with the viewpoint - taken from Deck 9 of a cruise ship leaving the wharf. Unless you were up high and on the harbour, you wouldn't see the old buildings.
                    Glad you liked the shot.

Thanks Cathrine - Haven't you been to Sydney? Most visitors make it their first stop, followed by the Great Barrier Reef or Uluru.
Australia has so much more to offer than these.
I nearly didn't post the Bridge - it was dusk, but no lights on and the light was very dull indeed. But it is a view of the Bridge that you would not ordinarily see.
                      Thanks for looking.

Thanks Chevvy - We only had one afternoon in Sydney whilst waiting to board the ship for our cruise so phootgraphic time was limited.
The harbour is beautiful, and so photogenic, but when we go to Sydney I love roaming the streets of the CBD. Sydney has some beautiful old buildings and I took heaps of shots - most of them no good!! I am still learning with architecture and haven't done much of it, but enjoy it.
Looking forward to your roses from your outing the other day!

I still play but haven't played orchestrally (& that was on viola by that time taken up to help my daughter) since 2005 but still do some playing for church & have got into playing Scottish fiddle instead (as well as a bush band). Folk music was something that took me a while to get into the style after the more rigid classical training. I joined in "the fiddlers tent" at Bundanoon (in the NSW southern highlands) Scottish Highland Gathering 2011.

Thanks for mentioning where you took the photo of the Con from as that was going to be my next question. I have to take my Olympus gear into Sydney for some shots but there is a restriction around the Opera House & that just has to be managed carefully (just dodge anybody trying to stop you ).

I hope to go into Darling Harbour for the PMA Imaging & Entertainment Show on the weekend of 24/6/2011, but I might be more engrossed in having a look at gear than taking photos.

Great sharp shots of the bridge Lyn. I love the way that almost every time you see a shot of the bridge there are people walking over it in little groups. I was lucky enough to get a couple of days in Sydney myself in 2009. I really enjoyed exploring it's a wonderfull city and Australia is a definite must return venue. I posted some of my images on dcresource a while ago they are mainly Sydney although there are a couple of the Gold Coast and Canberra thrown in at the beginning as well. Here is a link to them

hope that's allowed here as I didn't want to take up lots of space reposting. As you can tell I really enjoyed my few days in OZ only downside was that I got swine flu on the last 2 days that cut the sightseeing down a bit. I ended up having to fly back feeling really ill. Still want to go back though.
