  • My Backyard by Moonlight.

I decided to try a night shot using Auto WB with a bright moon & this is the result taken from my balcony overlooking my backyard. No, this is not a day shot in the sun.
Taken with E30, ZD14-54 II lens at 14mm, in Manual 60 secs, f2.8, ISO 200, VIVID and Auto WB. It is almost a full moon. The clouds in the sky might be left over smoke from todays back burn in the Grose Valley. Note the street light shining through the trees. Taken at 10:59pm (not 11:59pm as the camera was still set at Summer Daylight Saving Time).

You can even see the dead trees with a painted cross waiting to be cut.

    Comments are welcome.

That's actually rather good. Have you tried a brighter exposure?

Thanks Ian but not yet. I just went for the maximum time before BULB at 60 secs & with maximum aperture. I decided to try it with this result & next time I'll use BULB & experiment a little more. I did use NATURAL with close to daylight results, but changed it to VIVID from the RAW file to give it a bit more depth of colour. It's interesting to see what can be extracted from just moonlight.

An Australian forum (incidently where I discovered Barkly in Canberra with his E620) have a monthly competition & last month was themed My Backyard & this month is 1/15 of a Second or Slower & I was thinking in terms of that with my experimentation.

Thanks francois. I was hoping to get more but I have to think of my wife that loves her sleep undisturbed & then there was also a fair bit of smoke from the hazard reduction burn off in the Grose Valley north of me (Sydney has suffered poor air quality because of it. Suck eggs, is all I can say. )

One of the things that help me is, because we have a stronger sunlight around Sydney compared to the UK (especially Scotland), it would probably be the same for the brightness of a full moon. On a clear night, the full moon is quite bright.

I'll look for more opportunities again because I like the effect & maybe come up with something interesting.

                Cheers.

WOW! ... Ross, I like this shot very much just as it is.

I think a little more shadow detail would also be nice.

                      Aawoooooo....

                      Thanks Mark.

I took photos (in daylight) of the one of the trees coming down gradually (by chainsaw) & I'll post them soon.
