This was an experiment that went pear-shaped. The intention was to shoot the Sydney-Melbourne XPT
hurtling towards the camera at 100kmph, right over my head, but I was on the wrong track and lost focus!
Nevertheless, the shot is not without drama.

Dynamic Focus Area should have been set at Centre High rather than Centre Low.

Oh ! Mark your working so hard for this shot ! Its so unfair that the TRAIN was on the WRONG TRACK for YOU ! ... never mind ... it ALL comes to he who waits, patiently

Ross, I am hoping Mark is using a remote for his camera shutter operation(between the tracks?) YIKES HE IS NOT LAYING ON THE TRACKS IS HE

An interesting experiment, and I'm sure you had worked out a safe method to do it.

But - there can be a powerful movement of air under a train, enough to dislodge a camera. Coaches and wagons often have more brake, heating and other connectors than are actually used, these can dangle quite close to track level and are disconcertingly solid.

Manual pre-set focus with the camera firing in burst mode might be more likely to succeed.

That would be my concern too, but if some of the ballast is moved out to create a nest, maybe it might stay there better (& hoping nothing is dangling). On the other hand, Mark, don't try it again!

Thankfully that all goes into tanks. Could you imagine the comments we'd get about the crappy railways we have if that happened.
We have that anyhow because the state govt hasn't done it's job for too long.

Thanks Nick. I will remember your advice and that powerful movement of air next time I go for the shot I was trying for. Perhaps I should consider using the E-520 instead!

And thanks for giving me credit for not being entiely mad - I assure you and all that I did work out a safe way of doing it which I shall reveal later when I am able to post a successful result.
