  • Bushtown, Thoona

On yesterday's Sunday drive around the backblocks I stumbled upon a eerie little place called Thoona.
I can imagine that it was like traveling two centuries back in time with "Dr Who", although didn't meet any Darleks!
    1.
Driving into Thoona this is what you see - a pub, a war memorial,
a store and an old gum tree, which aside from a few shanties is about all there is.
    2.
Being Sunday the General Store come Post Office was closed, the proprietor and Postmaster (both of him) were probably across the road at the Pub.
    3.
The General Store has emblazoned upon its facia, "Established 1880" and although the street was deserted as I unzipped the camera bag,
inevitably a group of people materialised from nowhere to pollute the picture just as I was about to trip the shutter.
    4.
They pressed their noses against the glass to hide reflections - not a single ADS case among them, so I waited!
The window was full of bric-a-brac, an old butter urn, old records and a turntable player, cane chairs and rusty kitchen scales.
    5.
I'm sure there are way more private PO Boxes than local residents to rent them.
I struggled to imagine what it would be like to live here.
    6.
We headed out of town across the wide flat plains towards the Warbies (Range). The open rural landscape crouches beneath a high blue sky,
a shimmering distant homestead between two River Red Gums catches my eye as I fit the 50-200mm to pull it into focus.

Some lovely shots Mark. It's the sort of town that if you blink at the wrong time, you'll miss it.

Is that a "ball & chain" next to the scythe in the left indoors photo? Also, it looks like a kerosine stove on the shelf. What an interesting assortment of bits & pieces.

This is a lovely set Mark - so Australian!

The 1st photo sets the theme beautifully. It could be a small Australian town anywhere.

Quite a few cars at the pub - did you go in and check the characters out?

I would have loved to have got in amongst those old things - there would have been treasures there!

I think it's just a piece of chain and a kero stove for sure there, Ross.

I don't think I've been into a pub just for a beer since my late teens, Lyn.
The bric-a-brac in the window was just a glimpse of what could be seen inside - you would have been in your element while Neil would be tapping his toes outside!

          Thanks Lyn.

Oh - how right you are Mark! But I try to do my Antique shop/secondhand shop/thrift shop trawling without hubby in tow.

How lovely that old milk churn would look in my garden - with a ROSE in it of course!

It really does look as if it's stuck in time doesn't it. Quaint, ish, but probably not somewhere I'd like to live.

Me either, Ellie - I can't really imagine how the few people living there spend their time ... they do have a sports ground but I reckon they'd be battling to put a cricket team on the pitch.
