Hahndorf South Australia

When I joined this forum, several of the members recalled that they had visited Hahndorf, South Australia.
In 1838, 200 Prussian refugees arrived in South Australia and established the village of Hahndorf in the Adelaide hills.
It is now a pretty tourist town which attracts many visitors.
Many of the original homes in the main street have been turned into shops or B & B's.
Hope you enjoy these few snaps.

I was one of those members who has recollections of a visit to Hahndorf!

Your pix bring back very happy memories of our time in Australia in 2001. Can't believe it was ten years ago in July.

These are lovely images and an added bonus - chocolate!

Too many years have gone by for me to remember much about Hahndorf but these pictures capture some of the charm.

In spite of the sunshine we also have widespread flooding in our region.

Fortunately it isn't as serious as it has been in other parts of the country.

So count yourselves lucky that you have snow - at least you can sit cosily by the fire eating muffins and toasted marshmellows!

Thanks Annie - Glad the photos bought back memories of a lovely trip. I included 'Chocolate @ No. 5' quite deliberately as the Hot Belgian Chocolate is be-oot-i-ful! Not a good thing to have one one's doorstep though!

We have been so lucky in SA this summer - no bushfires of note, and no floods - yet! The River Murray levels are rising, but not expected to get to us for about 3 weeks. SA is the place to be!

Hi Annie - I wasn't actually referring to football as such but to South Australians in general who we of the Eastern States refer to as "Crow Eaters" ... it's part of the Aussie character to hurl insults at our closest friends knowing that it will taken in a spirit of fun and genuine goodwill.

The closer the friendship the grosser the insults ... it's an Aussie thing.

Yes, I know of the rivalry between the states in Australia - other members of our family live in Queensland, so there's a fair amount of banter between there and SA! I guess we have similar friendly rivalry between England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland!

One of my relatives sent us a wonderful God Bless Australia slide show, which certainly poked fun at each and every part of the country but would definitely be taken in good heart!

I haven't heard of or seen the God Bless Australia slide show but as you may know, Queenslanders we call "Banana Benders", Tasmanians are "Taswegians", and so on.

With relatives in Queensland you should be well versed in our vernacular to prepare you for the culture shock that awaits you when you visit Oz.

Never mind Mark. You Mexicans (south of the border) can't help for where you are although you came from that often forgotten little island down south we won't hold that against you & them banana benders (up north) have had it really tough this year (the price of bananas are going to go up with all those crops wiped out).

It doesn't matter, we help our Aussie mates out no matter where they are.

Lyn, I didn't overlook your lovely photos. I'm just too quick at giving cheek to my elders.

It brings back memories from when we were there. I'm trying to think where we went in SA years ago when we spent a week on an Aboriginal Mission Station. I know we went into Adelaide afterwards & came home via the coast road so we must have driven through Hahndorf (about 35 years ago). It is similar to Richmond in NSW where the first bit of road going to Windsor is planted just like that (the home of my wifes ancester brought here unwillingly but became a teacher in the area & is also an ancester to Elle McPhearson) & the buildings are similar too.

We spent a month over in Oz in 2001 but barely 'scratched the surface'. What an amazingly diverse country. We were over for a cousin's wedding held in the Tantanoola Caves at Mount Gambier. Doubt if we will ever attend such a spectacular wedding venue again.

We drove from Adelaide to Mount Gambier and then on to Melbourne all along the coast. Visited Melbourne, Sydney, Uluru and spent a week at one of the north Cairns beaches (Palm Cove). So much left to do - would love to head west to the Perth area and up to Darwin.
