  • I might be hungry

On Hogmanay we stopped off at the Highland Wildlife Park on the way North.
For once an animal behaved as I wanted. This female Amur Tiger sat down about 2-3 metres in front of me. I had the E-3 with50-200 on. The focus light caught her attention........
......and the eyes will follow you round the room.

Lovley look in its eyes, very knowing and well captured. Is it my monitor or is there a blue sheen on the whites near the bottom?

It's an impressive image, Duncan ... those eyes!

And my 50-200mm bought online from the US is due to arrive tomorrow.

It will be my first SWD lens and with it I'm hoping to be able to take my work to the next level.

        Great shot Duncan

I wonder why I missed it when you first posted it. Still, glad to have seen it now.

        Thanks for sharing

I didn't see it earlier either. A great shot.

                Many thanks for the comments.

Yes there is a hint of blue. I'm not sure whether it is a colour cast from shooting through the Lexan window or the weather. The thaw had only been going for a few days and in the Highlands the weather was still cold.
I thought about correcting it but decided my lack of skill would end up with a purple tiger or some such.

If you look closely at the eyes you can see me and my other half reflected!

                  Re: I might be hungry

I took the liberty of copying and having a go in Photoshop. In Colour Balance I first adjusted the midtones, and the result with the following settings looks good on my monitor:

                  Midtones:
Cyan-Red: +34 (direction of pluss red)
Magenta-Green: -5 (direction of more magenta)
Yellow-Blue: -10 (in the direction of more yellow)

Brings out a nice orange in the tiger and reduces the cyan-green on the mouth area.

                  Shadows:
Cyan-Red: +6 took out the last cyan under the nose.

I calibrated fairly recently, so hopefully this might work for you.

Edit to add: There is a trade-off between getting rid of the last green in the white under the nose and adding too much red in the lower left corner. Pluss 6 in the shadows might be a little too much.

Another thing would be to use the dropper method of white balance correction. E.g. opening the RAW file Olympus Viewer 2 & in the White Balance section, select "gray point selection" & use the dropper on the white areas. I believe other programs will allow such adjustment to JPEGs too & this might be a quick way of achieving a good result.

Cathrine, your dedication to perfection shows again.

Well, Cathrine. I had a go with your advice. I only have Elements 9 ( and I'm a bit simple in what I do) but nothing ventured nothing won.
I can certainly see a positive difference.

The colour in that last one's pretty good. Nice expression, but I prefer my cats with a mouth too small to fit me in.
