  • First encounter with the E-5

My E-5 arrived yesterday and luckily I found some spare minutes this morning to shoot some test shots.

First impression: the E-5 seems a noticeable step forward from my old E-3. I am still evaluating the images and I am a bit handicapped that Aperture has no E-5 support yet, but I managed to process some RAWs in Capture One.

I left the camera overall in the 'neutral' settings. Fine tuning will come in the next few weeks.

A lot of the images I shot are not really presentable, but here are some results:

First one: JPEG straight from the camera, shot with the 12-60

    100% crop:

Next I wanted to try the Dramatic Tone filter.
Here is a shot of the River Rhine, again with the 12-60

Here is the same shot in RAW, from Capture One

    And here a second pair:

    Looking good

The detail in that leaf and ice is excellent!

Those filters look quite good - true they are quite strong, but I'm sure they will find a lot of fans. I think they look pretty good here.

Nice shots. I like the Dramatic Tone as I think it is meant to be a little over the top. Thats what really grabs your eye. The second landscape works (with DT) best with the more defined clouds.

Be aware, that with the E5 comes a package called Ib. somehow it has got a glitch in the installation on my puter and the program won't start and b it won't let me un-install it??? Seems fairly useless anyway

Ehrm, I did not inspect the CD that came with the E-5...

But thanks anyway for the warning.

Ah Yorky, I just checked. It is a Windows program.
Can't help you with it, as I am on a Mac.

            Sorry.

Is that their image browser? I avoided it and installed only Viewer. (I use Picasa as a browser but now I have Bridge I ought to use that I suppose).

Well it seems to me "Dramatic Tone" has turned some really boring scenes into fairly interesting pictures.

Do the Dutch/Germans let binbags nest in trees like we do here? I'm shocked.

Does anyone know where I can get an E5? My other half was supposed to be getting me one for Christmas, as usual he left it too late and now can't find anywhere with one in stock, even Olympus.co.uk are out. Is he in trouble? Yes he is

I'd try calling some of the better Oly suppliers like SRS (http://www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk/) or your nearest LCE Group shop (or Norwich is a good bet).
                        Good luck!

They are still available in The Netherlands. If you don't mind the shipping costs, it can be arranged next monday.
