http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Ni%C3%B1a) The rain falls & without my keenness to get in & clear the weeds, they just grow & grow. This is my weedy backyard during the rain in need of a lot work. In the foreground are blurry streaks of rain, taken with E30, 14-54 lens @17mm, F2.8, 1/60 sec, ISO 250



Nothing special, but if anyone is keen, I wouldn't say no to help with cleaning it. Just kidding.

I like it Ross are they Eucalyptus trees? They grow like mad here in Kent I have one its 60ft tall in 8 years.regards JohnR.

Yes they are Eucalypts with a few dead ones amongst them. We have had a long drought & the trees have suffered but rain has improved over the last couple of years. The trees may have suffered not just from the drought but also from the replacement of the community's leaky swimming pool across the road from us which may have provided some water through the rock aquifer layers). You might be able to tell some of the dead ones (with the bare branches) especially from this next view.



On the right is a Banksia Integrifolia (Coast Banksia planted by us) covered in Morning Glory (not my idea of that name) or Convolvulus (one of 250 species) which is a very rampant weed here. You can almost see it run along the ground & up anything in its way.
In the middle is a small specimen of a Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia baileyana
) although it is considered a weed in the Blue Mountains & is described as such: Formerly grown for stockfeed on farms, where it is now called 'Coota-bloody-mongrel' Wattle.

It's interesting to hear of the Eucalypts (over 500 species) being grown in different parts of the world. I think California has some bush fires because of them. We get to hire large crane helicopters from the US that are modified for large scale water bombing. The first one that came hear was called "Elvis".

Yes Paul, it can be OK for finding some bugs etc but this is only a small bit of the yard & weeds. Unfortunately there is a fair bit more (it takes effort to maintain) but is nice with the different native flowers that come up. One of my favourites is the flannel flower but is fairly fickle with the right conditions. Some years are good & some there is only a few.

We may be in for a murderously hot summer and I would not want you to go up in smoke ... there may be time enough later for that, mate!

Thankfully my daughter & son-inlaw are here for a few days helping to clear it up & this weekend is going to be really hot, so work will continue in the morning until it gets too hot & then late in the afternoon when it hopefully cools down. Next week will be back to the mid twenties again, thankfully (& maybe some more showers).

The bush fires DO make me nervous when they are around & although our block is just outside the rated fire risk zone (ha ha, the whole Blu Mtns should be rated a fire risk area), it slopes to the north west & still worries me in case of any embers landing & taking off driven by the hot northwest winds.
