  • A strange brown fly (in Australia)

I found this brown fly hanging around our Eriostemon bushes & then it landed on a Dwarf Banksia Serrata leaf where it sat nicely for me.

    Taken with a Sigma 150 macro lens + EX25 on an E30 f6.3 1/50 sec

All comments welcome (plus an ID of the fly would be nice too if anybody knows in Australia).

Yes, the softness is probably the IS not set correctly for the lens with EX 25 or just too long a shutter speed. Boy it is hard to stay still & then it doesn't help when the breeze moves the leaf a little too. A brighter day or perhaps using a flash might be good to get shutter speed up. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for the comments.

At 1/50 sec I think you have done really well

The lighting is excellent and it is a great subject.

          Good morning Ross

Lovely image. I have never used extension tubes yet but it must be darn difficult with dof.

Looking at your image, I believe it is the Lauxaniidae family. I would recommend you post the image this forum. They specialise in True Flies (Diptera) from all around the globe. Experts go on line and help with IDs.

I hope you do not mind me posting my image on your thread but I think you will see the similarities. The link I gave will give you the species.

I use a Metz MS1 Ring flash, TTL operated via the cameras built-in flash.

Could you please give me your experience with the Sigma 150 Macro and the extension tube? I am curious as I stopped using the 1.4 converter due to refraction - too much glass. A tube is the much more sensible option.

          Cheers for now
          Best Regards

Thanks, it certainly looks like the family of the fly. I'll get around to following up the species as I get time. Got some music events to occupy me (listening & playing) for the next couple of days.
