  • The Laurence Whistler window

About a year ago I posted this picture of one of the Laurence Whistler windows at Hannington church:

(I intend to rephotograph it one day using wireless flash through the window on a dark evening to get this same effect but without any background. An ambitious project eh?...)
Anyway I was looking at it again much more closely and discovered an engraver's secret. As you see, there are sun rays, sheaves of wheat, and a scythe (nice snath, BTW). When you get really close you see that the sunburst and some of the wheat is engraved on the outside, while the rest of the wheat is engraved on the inside. The effect is very subtle. How clever is that...

It's a work of art the likes of which isn't created any longer. Beats modern art any day.

Thats a great image Pete I have been looking at it intently and looking at the dates on the handle of the scythe 1886 top handle bottom handle 1940 making him 54 when he died I suppose that was a good age in those days.
you say that it is one of the Laurence whistler windows, was william a brother?

They would appear to be related, but I am not certain how..

Very interesting Pete thanks for the information on the whistler family there appears to be a lot of them.

That first image is a lovely shot Pete, I like the composition and lighting, the way the engraving patterns are thrown onto the wall. Very nice.

We love walking around your way.... Kingslcere, Hannington, Sydmonton and Ecchinswell. Beautiful countryside.

Many thanks.. when I saw the shadow caused by the low winter sun I knew it was a potentially nice shot. I just need to repeat it with flash sometime..

If you are in Hannington one lunchtime and you happen to see an old git wielding an Olympus - that would be me :-)
