Agree, why do we need to have everything all year round? It’s ridiculous and makes, for example, strawberries less special if you can have them, from Costa Rica in December. I’d rather wait until June for tasty English ones. Watercress is another example, why ship the stuff from the USA. There’s an argument that some food miles are pretty cost effective (no example to cite, sorry) but going back to the NZ lamb, I think there’s a clever statistician at work there, possibly one with an air freight business and relatives running a sheep farm in NZ! I’m sure with a bit of effort we could be self sufficient in basic foodstuffs in this country but the yummy mummies in Islington might struggle to get their avocados and quinoa at times!
Don’t we already do enough trade with the place that is furthest away?
Why can’t we be self sufficient in lamb and venison, why on earth does it have to come all that way fercryingoutloud?
That was not my point. It has always been said that if you want to see what England was like 50 years ago, visit New Zealand.
That doesn't work anymore. They will have much the same digital technology as us, online shopping, etc,
Fifty years ago, we didn't even have pocket calculators, videorecorders, computers, CDs, mobile phones, the internet, the Channel Tunnel. We won't be going back to that.
The (Maastricht) Treaty on European Union was only 25 years ago.
Fifty years ago, we didn't even have pocket calculators, videorecorders, computers, CDs, mobile phones, the internet, the Channel Tunnel.
We won't be going back to that. Harold
Apart from the Channel Tunnel... That's a great pity. In those day's most of us had a life worth living... even if we didn't realise it at the time.
These day's, for a vast majority, we don't walk and don't talk unless it's on-line to 2,000 + friends of whom we have never seen or met in real life and then... wonder why we are lonely.
Maybe, we should all get out more when it rains, then, when the sun shines, we are better able to see the rainbow. You can't have one without the other.
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.
