  • Life as a "Lefty"

Two weeks ago I had surgery to repair torn ligaments in my right shoulder.

My own fault, I was testing cameras and tried to use some FF CaNiKoNs

So, I'm virtually a lefty (non politically) I was quite surprised that apart from tying shoe laces, I've copped reasonably well.

Today I tried shooting left handed with the E-M1. With the grip on, LH use in portrait orientation, is not bad. But for anything serious, it will have to be on a tripod, as zoom with one hand is very tricky.

I Surprised myself by successfully tossing an omelette, so maybe I should combine, tethered capture and cooking into my current "style"

If you are going to use FF CaNiKoNs I would strongly recommend doing some weight training first. They are monsters by comparison with the current OM-D series.

Rather than a Gym subscription I would suggest using a Mamiya RZ or RB for weight training. You don't need one for each hand though; just take the lens off of the body and you will have a perfectly balanced set of weights.

Glad to hear that you're on the mend, Graham.

Weight issues are alway quoted when it comes to Canon and Nikon, but the overriding aspect has to be image quality for professional photographers. For us happy snappers, we can tolerate lesser picture quality, and more to the point most of our images (the likes of 'I saw this in front of my lens') would look equally good, or better, taken with a smart phone. The iPhone is great, light and you can text and make calls when you get bored of snapping!

I have to admit, since I got an iPhone 6, my XZ-1 has had very little use

Agreed; but there also has to be an element of compromise, as well as thought given to how the images will be viewed.

I would still argue that for optimum quality a 6 x 7 film camera is difficult to beat, but that is neither practical nor necessary if the resulting images will only ever be published online; which is the case for many professionals today.

Full frame digital is a good compromise but still very heavy and expensive. Our son uses a Nikon D750 which is a formidable camera, but it is OTT for my purposes, and far too heavy. He did try the D810 for a while, (36 MP), but found the D750 was a better compromise (that word again) for his style of photography.

I work on the basis that my E-M1 provides more than adequate image quality for my professional needs, (I downscale to 3 MP for report documents), and that if I have to I can either borrow the D750 or use medium format.

The only question that remains is, having derailed this thread onto the subject of photography, will it have to be moved, or can we compromise?

My Sony Z3 has a superb camera, with 22 MP output. The only thing that spoils it is excessive Jpeg compression, which is completely unnecessary given the ready availability of 64 GB and even 128 GB micro SD cards.

I gather there is an app available that allows raw output from phone cameras.

I think this thread is now compromising the latest edicts on thread content - this is supposed to be a photo free area - or so we were told

                  My fault, as usual.

But what else can we expect on a photography forum?

I drive to the best of my ability a 24MP mirrorless, weight (I mean mass) is 680g and the glass and brass lens another 500g. I don't find it too heavy to haul.

If you're right handed and forced, like this, to cope left-handed, at least temporarily, it might be good exercised for the relatively under-used right side of your brain? Hopefully, anyway!

My thoughts too. It's never too late to develope the right side of the brain too.

I thought you were a film man these days Steve? Perhaps what you really need is something like this:

Yashica spent weeks teasing an "unprecedented" return to the camera world last month, and today the famed camera brand finally unveiled its new creation.

I'm using my iPad a lot more than I did, because of the predictive text, auto capitalisations and a few other things that are harder on th laptop.

Tethered and wifi control of the camera is really getting used more.

My three year old Grandson is also being very useful, and is far more sympathetic than my own sons...
